According to 9to5Mac , recently released court documents have provided a detailed look at the secret product of the AI device development venture of former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive and Sam Altman.
According to The Verge and Bloomberg , it all stemmed from a lawsuit initiated by iyO, a startup backed by Google, which claimed that the "io" brand bore many similarities to their own.
However, the story doesn't end there. According to TechCrunch , a series of publicly available documents reveals that OpenAI representatives, including Tang Tan, a former Apple product design manager now the Hardware Director of io, met with iyO CEO Jason Rugolo to "learn more about the in-ear headphone product" of the brand.
However, internal emails downplayed the importance of these meetings, suggesting the team was unimpressed after numerous failed attempts.
Interestingly, these new documents confirm that OpenAI spent months researching headset devices and thoroughly investigated the market and audio devices in general. However, according to Tang Tan's testimony in court, the joint venture's first future AI product will "neither be a headset nor a wearable device."
Instead, io's Hardware Director revealed that the design – which Sam Altman once described as "fitting in a pocket or on a desk" – is still not finalized and the product is at least another year away from being announced or officially launched.
"Our intention with this collaboration is to create products that go beyond traditional frameworks and interfaces," Altman wrote in a statement submitted to the court.
