According to 9to5Mac , recently unsealed court documents have provided a detailed look at the secretive product of the AI device development joint venture of former Apple Design Chief Jony Ive and Sam Altman.
According to The Verge and Bloomberg , it all stems from a lawsuit filed by iyO, a Google-backed startup, which claims that the "io" brand is similar to theirs.
But the story doesn’t end there. According to TechCrunch , a series of public documents show that OpenAI representatives, including Tang Tan, a former Apple product design manager who is now io’s head of hardware, met with iyO CEO Jason Rugolo to “learn more about the brand’s in-ear headphone product.”
However, internal emails downplay the importance of these meetings, suggesting the team was unimpressed after several failed experiments.
Interestingly, though, the new documents claim that OpenAI has spent months researching headsets and has thoroughly researched the market and audio devices in general. However, according to Tang Tan's statement to the court, the joint venture's first future AI product will be "neither a headset nor a wearable."
Instead, io's hardware chief revealed that the design — which Sam Altman once described as "fitting in a pocket or on a desk" — is still not finalized and that the product is at least a year away from being announced or officially launched.
“Our intention with this collaboration is to create products that go beyond traditional frameworks and interfaces,” Altman wrote in a statement to the court.
