According to sources from Digital Chat Station (China), Apple plans to refine the design of the Dynamic Island notch on the iPhone 17 series, which will launch this year.
Specifically, in a Weibo post, this person stated that Apple plans to change the system with a completely new interface called Smart Island.
Although no details were mentioned, this is very likely a connection to the leaks made earlier this year by this leaker.
Back in February, Digital Chat Station revealed that the iPhone 17 Pro Max would use metallized technology for its Face ID system, integrating the signal transmitter and receiver into a single structure. This approach would reduce the size and thickness of the components.
Therefore, Dynamic Island is also more compact. Besides the iPhone, this technology will also be incorporated into the next iPad Pro line and a rumored foldable iPad model.
Unlike traditional iPhone lenses that use curved lenses to redirect light onto the image sensor, metalens are a type of ultra-thin, flat lens. Their microscopic nanostructure allows them to control and focus light with high precision, according to MacRumors.
However, this rumor contradicts information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in January, who suggested that the iPhone 17 models would not have a smaller Dynamic Island. Kuo's view also contrasts with an earlier prediction from analyst Jeff Pu in 2024.
Similar to Digital Chat Station, Pu predicts that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will adopt metallized Face ID technology, significantly reducing the size of Dynamic Island. Jeff Pu has reiterated this prediction several times and has a history of accurately predicting Apple products.
Dynamic Island first appeared on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022 and was later expanded to the entire iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 lineup. However, the size of this feature has remained the same across generations. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 lineup in September.
