Sergio Ramos is facing intense criticism.

Monterrey is leading the Apertura 2025, but behind that impressive run of results lies a major concern: a shaky defense.

Sergio Ramos is being criticized for frequently pushing forward to attack.

After five rounds, Rayados conceded seven goals – a figure that made Sergio Ramos, a symbol of experience in the defense, a target of fierce criticism from Mexican football experts and media.

In their 3-2 victory over Mazatlan on August 18th, coach Domenec Torrent's team secured all three points to move to the top of the table alongside Pachuca. However, conceding two goals exposed a persistent problem in their defense. Ramos – once a "steel shield" at Real Madrid and the Spanish national team – is now considered to be too focused on attacking, neglecting his primary defensive duties.

Former Mexico international Ricardo Pelaez, now an ESPN pundit, bluntly pointed out: “Monterrey lacks balance. They score a lot of goals but also concede too easily. Ramos looks like he's there to score, not to defend. The team needs all the players involved in defensive support, otherwise they will be very vulnerable.”

Not only domestically, but the voices from Spain were equally harsh. TNT Sports journalist Nacho Miguelez even called Ramos a "former player": "I don't understand why a big club would sign a former player. Sergio Ramos is already a former player, so who do they intend to compete with?"

Sergio Ramos has now moved to Mexico.

In reality, Ramos brings mental toughness and experience, but Monterrey still lags behind many teams in defensive statistics, from Bravos, Xolos, Tigres to America and Pachuca. If they don't quickly address this, Rayados will struggle to maintain consistency in the long run.

The next three matches against Necaxa, Puebla, and Queretaro will be a test for Ramos and his teammates. This is both an opportunity for the defense to regain its solidity and a test to see if the high-profile Spanish signing still has what it takes to prove his worth at the age of 39.
