According to the Ministry of Health , the current erratic weather and high humidity create ideal conditions for the growth of respiratory and digestive pathogens. In addition, increased travel, social interaction, and large-scale events at the end of the year significantly increase the risk of disease transmission. The national infectious disease surveillance system has recorded localized increases in many areas, with numerous cases requiring hospitalization at tertiary hospitals.
High-risk groups such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions are at risk of rapid and severe progression if not detected and treated promptly. The Ministry of Health requires localities to strengthen surveillance, early detection of cases, thorough handling of outbreaks, and ensure safe patient triage, admission, and emergency care to prevent cross-infection in hospitals. Provincial health departments should intensify communication, develop easily understandable recommendations tailored to each region, and, in particular, coordinate with the education , industry and trade sectors and industrial park management boards to control outbreaks in schools, factories, and shopping centers.
From the beginning of 2025 to the present, the whole country has recorded more than 132,000 cases of seasonal influenza, including 3 deaths. The influenza virus strains currently circulating mainly in Vietnam are A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and influenza B. The World Health Organization estimates that annually, the world records approximately 1 billion cases of seasonal influenza, with about 290,000 - 650,000 deaths and up to 20% of the population potentially infected, depending on the circulating virus strain.
The latest surveillance data on the 2025-2026 influenza season shows that influenza virus activity is increasing globally, with the A/H3N2 strain predominating in regions such as Northern Europe, West Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. According to epidemiologists, seasonal influenza viruses comprise many strains, including A/H1N1 and A/H3N2, which have the ability to undergo continuous and annual antigenic changes. Meanwhile, influenza B strains have the potential to cause serious complications, especially in high-risk individuals.
