The total number of measles cases accumulated from the beginning of 2024 to week 42 is 1,192. Districts with a high number of cases include Binh Chanh district, Binh Tan district, and Thu Duc city.
Explaining the slow decrease in measles cases despite Ho Chi Minh City having implemented a measles vaccination campaign for children aged 1 to 10 for over a month, the Department of Health stated that it is because some children have not yet received both doses of the measles vaccine .
Therefore, measles cases in this age group may still occur sporadically but do not cause large outbreaks.
According to the Department of Health, measles can occur at any age if not fully vaccinated. Statistics show that up to 23% of patients are children under 9 months old, who are not yet old enough to receive the measles vaccine according to the expanded immunization schedule, and 18% are people over 10 years old, outside the target group for vaccination in the campaign.
The Department of Health has requested that localities continue to review the list of children who have not been vaccinated against measles in order to vaccinate them.
The Department of Health has submitted a document seeking opinions from competent authorities regarding the expansion of the measles vaccination target group and will implement it immediately upon approval. At the same time, it has requested localities to continue reviewing and updating information on children in their areas and organize vaccination campaigns.
Measles is an acute infectious disease caused by the measles virus, transmitted from person to person through the respiratory tract. Anyone who has not been vaccinated or has not received both doses of the measles vaccine is susceptible to measles.
