Besiktas parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just as the 2025/26 season was beginning. |
In the early hours of August 29th, Solskjaer was sacked following Besiktas' 0-1 defeat to Lausanne Sport in the second leg of the 2025/26 Conference League play-off final. This decision came just minutes after Besiktas lost their chance to participate in European cup competitions this season.
In an official statement, Besiktas said: “The contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated by decision at the board meeting. Following the meeting, chairman Serdal Adali thanked Solskjaer for his contributions up to this point.”
This marks the end of Solskjaer's eight-month journey in Türkiye. Solskjaer was appointed Besiktas' head coach in January and led the team to a commendable fourth-place finish in the Süper Lig last season.
However, the defeat against Lausanne in the Conference League play-off round, followed by elimination from the Europa League play-off round by Shakhtar Donetsk, became the final straw for the Besiktas management.
Under Solskjaer, Besiktas didn't play too badly in the domestic league. However, their poor form in European competitions, especially the defeat against Lausanne – a much weaker team – caused the Norwegian coach to lose credibility.
