Southampton mock Manchester City on social media.

On the night of May 10, Man City was held to a 0-0 draw by relegated Southampton in the 36th round of the Premier League. Immediately afterwards, Southampton posted a mocking post on social media, claiming that the team had earned "a point without even trying to play football".

The post was meant to be a jab at Manchester City, after manager Pep Guardiola and defender Ruben Dias criticised the home side for their negative play in their post-match press conference.

“It’s frustrating to play against a team like Southampton,” Dias said. “They didn’t even try to play, they just tried to play for time the whole game. I felt they didn’t want to play or win. They were just defending. We tried everything, created chances but couldn’t score. That’s how it is.”

Guardiola added: “The game was very difficult. We had chances but unfortunately we couldn’t score. Southampton played with the intention of defending, defending, defending, and trying to waste time. We still accept the score because everything was still in our hands. I didn’t expect them to defend so deep.”

Manchester City had more than 70% possession and created 26 chances on goal, while Southampton failed to muster a single shot on target, focusing mainly on defending and enduring pressure from their opponents throughout the 90 minutes at St Mary's.

The team currently bottom of the Premier League table thus gained a valuable point. This point is of great significance for Southampton, helping them overcome the unwanted record of the lowest points tally in Premier League history with 11 points.

Southampton now have 12 points, meaning Derby County's worst record since the 2007/08 season remains unbroken. Meanwhile, Manchester City were disappointed with the result, as the draw left them behind in the race for Champions League qualification.
