In a recent interview, the Inter Miami forward frankly stated that Uruguay only has two World Cup titles, not counting the two Olympic gold medals in 1924 and 1928, titles that many Uruguayan fans still consider the "precursors" of the current World Cup.
"We have two World Cup titles, and two more before that, but I don't count them. Argentina has more World Cup titles than Uruguay," Suarez admitted.
Suarez's statement immediately sparked a major debate on social media. The majority of Uruguayan fans were outraged, as they were always proud of their national team's four-time World Cup victories.
History shows that the two Olympic Games preceding the World Cup were particularly significant and are considered the foundation for Uruguay's championships in 1930 and 1950.

The controversy flared up even more when FIFA published the official statistics on the countries with the most World Cup titles. In it, Brazil leads with 5 titles, followed by Germany and Italy (both 4 times), Argentina (3), France and Uruguay (both 2 times).
According to FIFA, the Olympic gold medal has never been considered a "world-class title" equivalent to the World Cup. Therefore, Suarez's public rejection of this traditional view touches upon the historical pride of Uruguay, a football powerhouse in the early 20th century.
Some fans criticized Suarez for "going against the heritage of Uruguayan football," while others defended the striker, arguing that he was simply respecting international statistical standards.
While playing for Uruguay, Suarez made 143 appearances and scored 69 goals. His only title with the national team was the 2011 Copa America. In September 2024, Suarez decided to retire from international football.
