In a recent conversation, the Inter Miami striker frankly stated that Uruguay only has two World Cup titles, not counting the two Olympic gold medals in 1924 and 1928, titles that many Uruguayan fans still consider the "precursor" of the current World Cup.
“We have two championship trophies, before that we had two more titles, but I don't count them. Argentina has more World Cup titles than Uruguay,” Suarez admitted.
Immediately, Suarez's comment created a big debate on social networks. Most Uruguayan fans were outraged as they are always proud that their national team has won the world championship four times.
History shows that the two Olympic Games before the World Cup were born had special significance and were seen as the foundation for the 1930 and 1950 championships of the Uruguayan team.

The controversy flared up when FIFA released the official statistics of the countries with the most World Cup championships. Brazil leads with 5 titles, followed by Germany and Italy (both 4 times), Argentina (3 times), France and Uruguay (both 2 times).
According to FIFA, the Olympic gold medal has never been considered a “world-class title” equivalent to the World Cup. Therefore, Suarez’s public rejection of the traditional view touches the historical pride of Uruguay, a football powerhouse in the early 20th century.
Some fans criticized Suarez for “going against the heritage of Uruguayan football”. While others defended the striker, saying he was only respecting international statistical standards.
Suarez played 143 times for Uruguay and scored 69 goals. His only national team title was the 2011 Copa America. In September 2024, Suarez decided to retire from the national team.
