Staying rooted in the community to spread literacy.
More than 25 years ago, young teacher Tran Thi Chau left the Cua region (Cam Lo commune) carrying the aspirations of youth to serve the people in the highlands of Lia commune. Back then, all she was greeted by were dilapidated classrooms with thatched roofs and mud walls, swaying in the strong winds of the mountains, where each classroom housed only 5-10 dirty children.
Unable to bear seeing those innocent children suffer, Ms. Chau persistently went "door to door," reaching every remote village to persuade parents to send their children to school. With genuine love, she treated her students as if they were her own children. Amidst the hardships, she confided: "I feel compassion for the children in disadvantaged areas, so I share with them whatever I can, with the sole wish that they can learn to read and write so that their lives will be less difficult in the future."

At the Ky Tang branch school, the biggest barrier for the Pa Ko and Bru-Van Kieu children is language. To help them confidently integrate, every week, Ms. Chau and her colleagues carefully consider and create engaging topics to enhance their Vietnamese language skills, building upon their mother tongue. Lessons are no longer dry and boring on paper, but come alive through familiar objects and items in their homes and classrooms, making learning exciting and engaging for the children.
Moreover, Ms. Chau and her colleagues have skillfully transformed discarded materials and broken items into vibrant visual teaching aids and colorful toys. She has also proactively built strong bridges between the school, families, and the community. She consistently encourages and guides parents to speak Vietnamese with their children at home, helping them enrich their vocabulary and become more confident in both daily communication and at school.
A kind mother to children in the highlands.
Teaching in the mornings and sewing clothes for her students in the evenings is a meaningful activity that Ms. Chau has maintained for many years. Out of compassion for her underprivileged students, she collects scraps of fabric and old cloth from around the villages, then cuts, stitches, and combines colors to sew new pants and shirts to donate to students and people in the highlands.
Seeing the children happily wearing their new clothes made from hundreds of pieces of fabric sewn together with love and care, Ms. Chau felt very happy. Not stopping there, she also voluntarily donated from her meager salary to renovate the playground and rebuild the fence around the school, aiming to provide the children with a safe and healthy play space.
During the summer months, while everyone else is resting, Ms. Chau embarks on a new journey, collecting old clothes, textbooks, and school bags to prepare school supplies for children in the highlands before the start of the new school year.

Her dedication not only warmed the hearts of the local people but also inspired many colleagues to join hands and contribute to changing education in the highlands. Ms. Hoang Thi Cam Tuyen, Deputy Principal of Lia Kindergarten, shared: "Ms. Chau is a teacher with solid professional skills, always dedicated and wholeheartedly loving towards children. With her dedication to the local people, Ms. Chau is a shining example for many staff and teachers in the school to learn from and emulate."
Mr. Ho Van Lam, from Ky Tang village, Lia commune, emotionally shared: “The people here are very grateful to Ms. Chau. Whenever there's a difficult situation or a need for help, she's always there. Thanks to her, the children's studies are progressing well, and from time to time, the villagers even receive new clothes and shoes from her.”
In recognition of her efforts and compassionate heart, in 2023, Ms. Chau was honored with the title of Outstanding Teacher by the President of Vietnam . For decades, she has dedicated herself to the remote villages, weaving countless beautiful memories with the land and people of the Lia region. Her greatest reward lies not in the titles she receives, but in the smiles of her adopted children, the Pa Ko and Bru-Van Kieu people. Her footsteps will continue through the villages, the sound of her sewing machine will continue to clatter every night, and the journey of this kind mother from the lowlands, "carrying knowledge to the mountains," will continue, because here are the beloved children with whom she vows to spend her life, never wanting to leave.
