According to information from Fabrizio Romano, the Dutch strategist had previously considered two options: returning to his old home Ajax Amsterdam or opening a new chapter at the German team.
Finally, after direct meetings from both sides earlier this week, coach Ten Hag gave Leverkusen the green light and was ready to take over from Xabi Alonso. Meanwhile, Ajax had to sadly withdraw from the race and look for another coach after the departure of coach Francesco Farioli due to conflicts with the board of directors.
“Bayer Leverkusen have made clear progress in negotiations with Erik ten Hag to appoint him as head coach. Ten Hag has given his full consent after recent direct contacts,” journalist Fabrizio Romano shared.
Dutch media reports claim Ajax have officially given up hope after receiving feedback that Ten Hag wants to pursue a new journey. It seems the Dutch coach is determined to restore his reputation after a turbulent time at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag arrived at Man United with the aura of illustrious achievements with Ajax - including three Eredivisie titles and a run to the Champions League semi-finals.
However, the Premier League dream quickly turned into a nightmare. Despite winning the FA Cup and EFL Cup, his reign was marred by constant instability, a dressing room rife with cracks and a style of play lacking any clear tactical identity.
In the current climate, returning to Ajax might have been the safe option. But coach Erik Ten Hag chose a more challenging path: joining Leverkusen, a young, hungry, and promising team.
Although unable to repeat the unbeaten season of 2023-2024, Bayer Leverkusen is still an attractive destination with a Champions League spot in hand, an effective management structure and a promising squad of players.
