Tet and gratitude

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên28/01/2025

When talking about Tet (Vietnamese New Year), people often mention new beginnings, future plans, or projects left unfulfilled in the previous year. Tet is also a time for reunions for those who live far from home, always seeking to return... But Tet is also a time to remember those of the past, to express gratitude to our ancestors.

Grateful to those who contributed to making Tet a celebration marking half a century since the country's reunification.

This year's Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) is an extremely special one for the entire Vietnamese nation. It marks half a century since the reunification of the country, bringing North and South together as one. The story of the aspiration for peace for the entire nation has always been a source of pride for countless generations. However, alongside this pride is a deep gratitude to the souls of the soldiers and millions of people who shed their blood, sacrificed their lives, and gave their youth across this S-shaped land for independence.

Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) arrives in every small alleyway.

Fifty years have passed, and many families still set aside a special place to remember them. To remember the Lunar New Year celebrations where they were present.

Perhaps, many families have lost children who sacrificed their lives when they were only 18 or 20 years old; meaning the time they spent celebrating Tet (Lunar New Year) with their families was very limited. But somewhere, I'm sure that their loved ones still remember those precious Tet celebrations when they were alive. And somewhere, stories about them will be retold during Tet for generations to come, expressing pride and gratitude for their sacrifice for the nation's peace.

The story of 50 springs of peace for the nation, of the reunions during Tet in every family, is always the most sacred and moving. As a result, Vietnamese people, no matter where they are in the world , always want to return to their families and homeland to reunite with them every Tet holiday.

Gratitude helps us appreciate the present moment.

Tet, the Lunar New Year, is a time of joy and also brings with it feelings of longing for loved ones in the afterlife. In the new year, sadness may pass, but the grateful remembrance will remain forever, a continuation of life and a journey towards brighter days.

Tet is vibrant in every moment, everywhere.

A friend shared a personal story on Facebook: every time she returned home for the Lunar New Year, her mother would ask, "Have you changed your towels yet?" Before she could answer, her mother would throw her two brand-new towels. Then, when her mother was gone and the year-end approached, she suddenly realized that it had been three years since anyone had reminded her to change her towels.

As for me, from around the 20th of the twelfth lunar month onwards, I often have dreams about distant loved ones. Sometimes I dream of Tet holidays from my childhood, where everyone was together. The dreams are so vivid that I've woken up in the middle of the night crying... My heart feels like it's going to jump out of my chest because of the overwhelming longing.

The Lunar New Year holidays are a time when we always remember our loved ones who are far away with gratitude, appreciating what we have and living each day to the fullest.
