TP - For over 10 years, teacher Le Thi Bich Thuy's charity class has consistently brought literacy to underprivileged and illiterate children.
The charity class run by teacher Thuy (Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuy, 67 years old) is located within the grounds of the Thanh Phu Community Learning Center (Cai Nuoc district, Ca Mau province). Regularly on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the sounds of children of varying ages practicing spelling can be heard. In this class, some children are 15-16 years old and only in first grade, while others are 8-9 years old and in third or fourth grade.
Having previously taught at a local elementary school, Ms. Thuy understands the circumstances of the students here. Since 2013, she has braved the rain and wind to maintain her charity class. Over the years, she can't even remember how many generations of students she has taught. She is happy that her students, after graduating and finding stable jobs, still frequently call to inquire about her health and the class situation.
Teacher Thuy said that there are currently 31 students attending the class. Most of them come from impoverished backgrounds and lack the opportunity to learn to read and write. Many of the students are particularly special; some are orphans living with elderly, sick grandparents; others, though young, have to earn a living by collecting scrap metal, selling lottery tickets, or working as laborers. There are even cases of three grandmother and grandchildren, or three mother and children, all sitting in the same classroom.
Since establishing the charity class, many poor children who were previously illiterate have now learned to read, write, and do basic arithmetic. For those cases where legal documents can be obtained, Ms. Thuy goes to great lengths to help them enroll in various schools in the area.
Teacher Le Thi Bich Thuy's charity class has 31 students of various ages, the youngest being 8 years old and the oldest 65 years old. Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuy was formerly a teacher, then served as the Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Thanh Phu commune, and after retirement, she took on the role of Chairwoman of the Thanh Phu Commune Education Promotion Association (Cai Nuoc district) until now.
“What motivated me to come to this class is love. Because of poverty, these children have to struggle in life too early, and their education is incomplete, which is a great pity and a great disadvantage. If they are not cared for and nurtured, I fear that as they grow older, literacy will become even more distant for them. Literacy is the key to unlocking the door for students to move forward in life and have a better future.”
As the oldest student in the class, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh (65 years old, Luong The Tran commune, Cai Nuoc district) said that she used to take her two grandchildren to school, but realizing she was illiterate, she asked to learn to read and write so she could teach them. “Before, my parents were poor and had many children, so I couldn’t get a proper education. Back then, I was only in the second grade, and I didn’t have a boat, so I had to drop out. Now my grandchildren are old enough to go to school, but I don’t know how to read and write to help them, so I asked Ms. Ba Thuy to let me join her class to ‘review’ the alphabet,” Ms. Binh shared.
