In a Bloomberg Power On report, analyst Mark Gurman stated that Apple's chip design team is working on hardware for future devices, including smart glasses, more powerful Macs, and artificial intelligence servers.
The source also revealed that Apple has made progress in developing chips for its smart glasses. This move suggests Apple is accelerating the process, and the device will compete with the popular Ray-Ban glasses from Meta, Facebook's parent company.
Gurman added that the smart glasses' processor will be based on chips previously used in the Apple Watch and will require less power than components in products like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Furthermore, the chip has been customized to remove certain parts to further improve energy efficiency. The processor is also being designed to control multiple cameras that are expected to be included in the smart glasses.
The iPhone manufacturer is expected to begin mass production of its processors by the end of 2026 or 2027. This suggests that if the smart glasses project is successful, it could potentially launch on the market within the next two years. Like other major Apple chips, TSMC will handle the manufacturing process.
In recent years, the silicon team has become a crucial part of Apple's product development engine, especially after the company began replacing Intel processors with its own Mac chips in 2020.
Gurman, citing internal sources, added that other semiconductor hardware is also being developed to support future versions of Macs, as well as AI servers that power the Apple Intelligence platform.
