TP - In the context of globalization and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Vietnamese education is gradually asserting its position on the world map. With strong investment from the Government, the continuous creativity of the teaching staff, and the eagerness to learn of students, the country's education system is undergoing a strong transformation.

Education experts believe that, from curriculum reform and technology application to promoting international cooperation, Vietnam is opening up new opportunities, aiming to train high-quality human resources ready to face challenges and integrate in the new era. Our ancestors taught: "Without knowledge, there can be no prosperity." Without investing in the cultivation of human resources, the country will find it difficult to prosper. (Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Head of Training Department, Vietnam National University, Hanoi)

Practice in a virtual reality model

In its finance training program, the School of Economics , Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi) includes some content on financial technology and some chapters on basic programming to help students acquire fundamental knowledge to become proficient in applying technology in practice.

The school is also changing and adjusting its curriculum to incorporate technological advancements, especially artificial intelligence (AI), in the digital transformation process. It's reducing content that AI can handle effectively and replacing it with new content. For example, thanks to AI and software applications, one person can now handle accounting for multiple businesses, unlike before when every business needed a dedicated accountant. The demand for accountants is no longer high, but there is a need for those who can perform accounting tasks in a financial management style – smart accounting. Therefore, the school's training program will reduce the amount of practical accounting entries, as technology already does a very good job. The new program will add content on data analysis and management thinking, meaning accountants must be able to synthesize and analyze information to provide management insights that help business owners make accurate decisions.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has a library system with a very large data source, even a database of all international publications worldwide. When students want to forecast gold prices or stock prices, thanks to open-source software, they can independently synthesize and analyze data to make predictions. This is very beneficial for students when they graduate and work in businesses, research institutions, etc., as they can create forecasting models in their respective fields.

Since 2023, VNU students have been learning through virtual reality at the SHB – VNU Banking and Finance Practice Center. With a simulated environment closely resembling real banking operations, students can experience basic tasks such as processing transactions on the system. This greatly benefits their learning process and helps students develop problem-solving skills, decision-making, and critical thinking.

To train human resources to serve the country, in addition to developing new programs and adjusting existing ones to best meet societal needs, developing the teaching staff, infrastructure, libraries, laboratories, etc., is a key requirement and task that the leadership of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) consistently directs. VNU's development strategy follows the model of a research and innovation university. To date, VNU has 36 research groups recognized as strong research groups at the VNU level, playing a leading role in many scientific fields and advanced research directions domestically and regionally.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien, Vice Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology: Aiming for the export of high-quality human resources.

Since 2020, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has been promoting a training model based on two orientations: research (integrated Bachelor of Science – Master of Science program) and professional application (integrated Bachelor of Engineering – specialized engineering program).

Starting from the 2024-2025 academic year, this university will strengthen its focus on student experience. Accordingly, student internships are divided into three stages: the awareness internship stage (from the second year), where students perform simple tasks in businesses as workers; the technical internship stage (third year), experiencing the design and manufacturing environment. This is the stage where students begin to transition from theoretical knowledge to practical application; and the graduation internship stage (fourth year for bachelor's degree programs or fifth year for engineering degree programs). In the final internship stage, students move from experience to real-world practice, enabling them to integrate into the business environment upon graduation.

Technology is constantly changing, and universities should only focus on training students in core values to enable them to think critically and develop in real-world situations. Regarding preparing the groundwork for high-tech industries like microchips and semiconductors, universities have the responsibility of preparing the workforce, but they still need investment in infrastructure from the government. Equipment such as cleanrooms and supercomputers can cost billions of dollars, exceeding the financial capabilities of most universities.

The issue of an oversupply of academics and a shortage of skilled workers is not easy to analyze. Vietnam currently lacks outstanding experts and leading specialists in both industrial and civil sectors, and relies heavily on foreign experts. However, on another level, the Vietnamese economy has not yet been able to fully absorb the high-quality human resources trained by universities. For example, a significant number of domestic university graduates are working in large foreign-owned companies. They cannot find jobs in Vietnamese or domestic companies because there are no positions that match their skills and training, or in other words, the work is not challenging enough.

Starting this academic year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology aims to export high-quality human resources. Graduates will then be true experts, not wasting their golden years (the 25-35 age range). In addition, the university also aims to train personnel in high-tech fields to meet the development trends of the domestic economy.
