In 2025, Kien Giang General Hospital was assigned a target by the Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation to encourage its staff and employees to donate over 1,000 units of blood. To date, the hospital has met this target. However, Kien Giang General Hospital is a tertiary hospital treating critically ill patients in the province, with hundreds of emergency patients, surgeons, and accident victims needing blood transfusions daily to save their lives. Therefore, the hospital is facing a severe blood shortage, with some emergency cases being delayed and some surgeries having to be transferred to higher-level hospitals due to insufficient blood.
To address this situation, a voluntary blood donation campaign was conducted among all staff and employees of the unit over a week (from August 11th to 17th), aiming to collect 626 units of blood. Dr. Truong Cong Thanh, Director of Kien Giang General Hospital, stated: “Those working in the medical field understand better than anyone the value of each unit of blood. In the process of saving patients' lives, blood is a ‘specialized medicine,’ especially in cases of accidents, gastrointestinal bleeding, obstetrics, hematology, etc. Therefore, all staff and employees of the hospital responded to the call to ‘Heal with knowledge - Save lives with heart - Donate blood for life.’ Immediately after the launch ceremony, the hospital’s management board and department heads directly participated in blood donation, spreading the pioneering spirit and demonstrating compassion and responsibility to the community.”
Dr. Vo Kim Tho, from the Infection Control Department, suffers from anemia and has never participated in voluntary blood donation before. Responding to the call from the hospital's Board of Directors, Dr. Tho donated blood for the first time. "Although my condition doesn't allow for regular blood donation, I still want to contribute a small part to save the lives of those who need blood. As a doctor, I understand what level of donation is appropriate to ensure both my own safety and to help patients," Dr. Tho shared.
Many officials, employees, and workers of Kien Giang General Hospital not only directly participated but also encouraged their relatives and friends to donate blood. Quach Trong Phuc, a resident of Rach Gia ward, shared: “My mother is a nurse at Kien Giang General Hospital. When she learned that the hospital was short of blood, she encouraged the whole family to participate. Having donated blood at school before, I know this is very safe and can help save many lives.”
In the near future, the blood supply situation in the province will continue to face many difficulties. Therefore, medical facilities in the province should organize campaigns to encourage officials, employees, and workers to participate in blood donation, and coordinate with Kien Giang General Hospital to collect, screen, and supply blood to meet the treatment needs of patients.
Kien Giang General Hospital calls upon all agencies, businesses, organizations, associations, volunteers, philanthropists, and the people throughout the province to participate in voluntary blood donation, with the spirit of "One drop of blood given - One life saved." Fixed blood donation points: Monday to Friday, 7-11 am and 1-5 pm, at Kien Giang General Hospital, 13 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, Rach Gia Ward. Mobile blood donation points are available every day of the week, including holidays, at registered blood donation centers. Please contact and register for mobile blood donation at the customer service hotline: 02978.552.002 or contact Ms. Danh Ngoc Minh - Deputy Head of the Social Work Department, phone number 0946.157.137 for advice and support. |
