In Bloomberg's Power On newsletter, reporter Mark Gurman predicts that Apple will launch the first Macs with M3 processors later this year or early 2024.
Based on information gathered from a prototype computer using the M3 chip under development, Gurman's source notes that the M3 Pro variant will feature 12 CPU cores, 18 GPU cores, and 36 GB of RAM.
The computer model is developed using macOS 14, the operating system expected to be launched at the conference for programmers (WWDC 2023) taking place on June 5.
If the rumors are true, the M3 Pro chip will have 2 more CPU cores and 2 more GPU cores than the M2 Pro, the maximum RAM is increased from 32 to 36 GB. Devices using this chip could be the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
According to 9to5Mac, the M2 Pro chip currently has 6 high-performance cores and 4 energy-saving cores. Meanwhile, the M3 Pro chip will increase the number of energy-saving cores to 6, for a total of 12 CPU cores.
This change was used by Apple when upgrading the M1 chip lines to the corresponding M2, by increasing the number of energy-saving cores while keeping the number of high-performance cores the same.
The M3 chip line is manufactured on a 3nm process. Not only does it have more processing cores, the performance of each core is expected to increase significantly.
At WWDC 2023, Apple is expected to launch a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M2 chip. According to Gurman, Apple is also developing a basic M3 version to equip the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac.
