Deutsche Bahn, one of the main sponsors of Euro 2024, has just announced that more than 3 million people (mostly football fans) have used the ICE (Intercity Express - a high-speed intercity train connecting 180 ICE stations in Germany and 6 neighboring countries: Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark) in less than 10 days of Euro 2024. Deutsche Bahn said that several national teams, such as Switzerland and Romania, have used the ICE train to travel to matches.
Approximately 182,000 tickets were allocated to football fans, including around 60,000 Fan BahnCards (railway passes) and about 7,000 Interrail passes (for interstate and regional trains within the European Union). The cities with the most fans were Berlin, followed by Frankfurt and Munich. Using a strategy of offering discounted tickets to football fans, Deutsche Bahn reported an increase of around 10,000 seats per day.
Beer and snack sales on high-speed trains in Germany are booming during Euro 2024.
Germany's national railway operator said that along with the approximately 3 million people using trains, the surge in beer and snack sales on board was also impressive. Deutsche Bahn doubled its beer sales in the first week of Euro 2024, with around 44,588 liters of beer – double the usual volume – purchased on trains between June 14 and 19. Meanwhile, sales of snacks and drinks, largely traditional German sausages (called bratwurst), increased by around 63%.
However, host nation Germany also faced some unfortunate downsides during Euro 2024. Germany, once considered a symbol of punctuality and efficiency, is now facing significant criticism for its rail network. This stems from a lack of regular maintenance and repairs, coupled with worker strikes that have caused disruptions to rail traffic. Deutsche Bahn admitted that Germany's rail network experienced serious disruptions on major routes during the first few days of Euro 2024.
"The operator has planned a complete overhaul of the entire railway system by 2030. The main components of this overhaul program will begin immediately after Euro 2024 concludes," Deutsche Bahn stated.
Unfavorable weather conditions also led to the closure of several fanzones. Perhaps the unluckiest were over 10,000 Turkish fans, who were unable to gather in the fanzones to support their team because local officials decided to close several areas for "visitor safety" reasons. The reason given by the local authorities for closing the fanzones was the frequent heavy rains, sometimes even hailstorms, during this season.
