(CTO) - After two years of implementation, the Project for the sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030 has created positive changes in production organization, improved economic efficiency, and contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

On March 26th, the Department of Agriculture and Environment (ARD) of Can Tho City organized a consultation workshop to identify rice growing areas and establish consumption linkages under the Project for Sustainable Development of 1 Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice Specialization Associated with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030 (the Project), aiming to promote the completion of mechanisms and solutions for developing high-quality, low-emission rice growing areas in Can Tho City in 2026 and subsequent years.

Identifying the implementation of the Project as a key task in restructuring the rice industry towards a green and sustainable direction, Can Tho City is implementing the Project in 64 communes and wards, with a planned area of ​​over 170,800 hectares by 2030, involving 171 cooperatives and cooperative groups. After two years of implementation, the area implemented by the end of 2025 has reached 104,500 hectares. The Project has created positive changes in production organization, improved economic efficiency, and contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Based on the guiding documents of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City has advised the City People's Committee to issue the Plan for implementing the Project for the period 2026-2030…

At the workshop, delegates received updates and information from the Department of Agriculture and Environment and related units on the implementation of the Project and the plan to identify rice-growing areas under the Project in 2026. They were also guided on the criteria and conditions for cooperatives, businesses, and farmers to participate in the Project. Furthermore, they exchanged ideas, discussed, and proposed solutions to effectively implement the contents and plans in 2026, and solutions to strengthen linkages between farmers in cooperatives and businesses for the consumption of rice under the Project.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, the main goal for 2026 is to build a high-quality specialized rice production area with a scale of 76,000 hectares. To achieve this goal, the collaboration of relevant sectors, close coordination between central agencies, the city, communes, wards, institutes, schools, businesses, and cooperatives participating in the Project is a key factor in identifying planting areas and linking consumption. The Department of Agriculture and Environment hopes that through this workshop, it will fully receive opinions and discussions from the grassroots, localities, cooperatives, and businesses.
