Find out why iPhone 17 Pro scratches easily

According to experts, the anodized layer on the aluminum case of the iPhone 17 Pro is susceptible to scratches, especially on the camera cluster for an unexpected reason.

Many people have noticed scratches on display models in Apple Stores, which are held by thousands of people every day and attached to metal cradles.

According to MacRumors , Apple has confirmed to them that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air on display in the store have scratches on the back due to being attached to the MagSafe wireless charging dock. The company confirmed that these are not "scratches", but "materials from the charger getting into the phone", and these marks can be wiped clean.

There have been no reports of retail iPhones with scratches on the backs, and there have been no reports of this issue on forums like Reddit or Apple’s support site.

However, this is still a matter of concern and many people want to test. YouTuber JerryRigEverything has conducted a durability test and the results show that the iPhone 17 Pro has an area that is prone to scratches, but not where the iPhones on display at Apple Stores are damaged.

According to JerryRigEverything , the iPhone 17 Pro models are made of aluminum, using an anodizing process to create the color. This process creates a hard, scratch-resistant finish similar to sapphire. He himself also demonstrated that most of the iPhone 17 Pro's case will withstand minor scratches, including the area with the cutout for MagSafe charging.

However, the camera cluster is a weak point. This camera cluster has a sharp, raised edge and is not beveled, causing the anodized layer here to not adhere firmly and be easily scratched.

iFixit has done a detailed investigation into the scratch problem on the iPhone 17 Pro, using an industrial microscope to provide a close-up look. Experts have pointed out that the scratches around the camera cluster are not simply surface scratches, but also a phenomenon of peeling off the anodized coating.

To find out why, iFixit spoke to David Niebuhr, a mechanical engineer and professor. Niebuhr explained that the problem lies in the sharp edge of the camera assembly, where the anodizing process used to color and strengthen the aluminum layer is uneven.

“Apple could have prevented this by creating a more gentle curve and avoiding a relatively sharp corner,” said Mr. Niebuhr.

This shows that although Apple has chosen a durable aluminum material for the iPhone 17 Pro, the design in the camera area is an unexpected weak point, making the coating easy to peel. Unless users use a case, the camera cluster is likely to be scratched during use.

In addition, iFixit also confirmed that iPhone 17 Pro owners will not have to worry about scratches on the back glass in the Magsafe area like iPhones displayed at Apple Stores. The scratched models at retail stores are likely damaged by rubbing against the metal on the charger that Apple is using.

For the iPhone Air, Apple doesn’t use the same anodizing process as the aluminum iPhone 17 Pro models. Instead, it uses physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology to coat the body with a thin layer of colored titanium.
