A group of 8th-grade students from Hien Quan Secondary School (Hien Quan commune, Tam Nong district) went swimming in the river, and five of them were unexpectedly swept away by the current and went missing.
On the evening of November 18th, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tam Nong district ( Phu Tho province ), announced that a tragic drowning incident had occurred in the area, resulting in the disappearance of 5 students.
The five students who drowned and went missing were all 8th graders residing in Hien Quan commune, Tam Nong district, Phu Tho province.

Earlier, at around 3:50 PM on November 18th, this group of 10 students rode bicycles and electric bikes to the alluvial plain of the Red River in Zone 1, Hien Quan commune, Tam Nong district (Phu Tho province) to play, and 6 of them went swimming. One of them was lucky enough to swim to shore and escape.
At 7:30 PM the same day, Mr. Hung stated that the authorities had found the body of a female student.
"The elite search and rescue forces of Phu Tho province are coordinating with forces stationed at Phong Chau bridge to participate in the search for the students," Mr. Hung said.
