President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian electronically signed a memorandum on June 17 aimed at ending the conflict between the two countries that has lasted more than three months. The document also stipulates the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the start of a 60-day period of negotiations on broader issues, including Tehran's nuclear program, while also setting the goal of ending the fighting in Lebanon.
However, on June 19, Iran announced its decision to suspend the entire 60-day negotiation framework with the US, citing Israel's continued attacks on southern Lebanon. Iranian officials also stated that the country would not make further commitments until it received firm assurances that there would be no more attacks on Lebanon and that the terms of the agreement with the US would be fully complied with.
Negotiations between the US and Iran, initially planned for Switzerland on June 19, were postponed at the last minute when Israel carried out a series of bloody attacks in Lebanon in retaliation for the deaths of four of its soldiers. Both Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon accused the other of violating the new ceasefire agreement – part of the preliminary deal signed by the US and Iran last week.
According to Lebanese media, at least 16 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Nabatieh area in southern Lebanon on the morning of June 20, despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that had been established the day before. The Lebanese national news agency (NNA) reported that Israeli fighter jets and drones carried out a series of attacks throughout the night and into the morning in the Nabatieh area. The airstrikes reportedly destroyed numerous homes and civilian structures, while Israeli forces also shelled the city of Nabatieh and its surroundings. In addition to the fatalities, 12 others were injured.
CNN reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz have instructed the Israeli military to "refrain from firing" in Lebanon. However, Lebanese media allege that Israeli airstrikes continued in the southern region of the country following the aforementioned statement. Previously, Tel Aviv stated it would only "conditionally comply" with the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah and had no obligation to implement the memorandum reached between the US and Iran.
Despite escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, delegations remain committed to a new round of negotiations on implementing an agreement to end the war in the Middle East. Speaking to reporters before departing from Joint Base Andrews for Switzerland to participate in the talks, US Vice President JD Vance expressed hope that progress would be made on the nuclear issue and the ceasefire in Lebanon, noting that he could only participate in the negotiations "for one or two days." According to the US Vice President, US negotiators, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, were already in Switzerland to address the technical aspects of the talks.
Meanwhile, on June 21, the Pakistani Prime Minister's Office announced that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had left Islamabad for Switzerland to participate in technical talks to continue the Memorandum of Understanding recently signed between the US and Iran. Accordingly, Prime Minister Sharif and the Chief of Staff of the Pakistani Army, Marshal Syed Asim Munir, will accompany a high-level delegation to the talks scheduled for June 21. Pakistan currently acts as a mediator between the US and Iran. On the same day, Iran's state television IRIB reported that the Iranian negotiating delegation, codenamed "Minab 168," had arrived in Zurich, Switzerland. On the social media platform X, the Swiss Foreign Ministry also confirmed the information, noting that the upcoming talks are part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the US.
Efforts to maintain the peace agreement between the US and Iran are still being made by all parties, but if Israel and Hezbollah do not abide by their ceasefire commitments, the talks in Switzerland will be in a deadlock and will not yield any substantive results aimed at ending the Middle East conflict.
