The Italian national team needs a complete overhaul. |
Italy plunged into a deep crisis after once again missing out on the 2026 World Cup, and the reaction from the highest levels was immediate.
Sports Minister Andrea Abodi declared that the country's football needs a complete overhaul, starting with a change in the FIGC leadership.
Just hours after the defeat against Bosnia, Abodi admitted that it was no longer a purely professional issue. He emphasized that football in Italy holds cultural significance and is a national symbol, so the repeated absence from the World Cup is unacceptable.
Since 2014, the team has not returned to the biggest tournament on the planet, and has not advanced beyond the group stage since winning the championship in 2006.
According to Abodi, responsibility cannot be avoided. He demanded that the entire system acknowledge its mistakes, instead of blaming external factors. Reform must begin at the leadership level, which is considered the foundation for all change.
Pressure is now mounting on the president of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina. The head of the FIGC did not resign after the defeat, and even sparked controversy with statements that were seen as belittling other sports. This has fueled a wave of criticism in the country.
Not only the management, but also influential figures in Italian football have spoken out. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis called for a fresh start, even suggesting changes in senior personnel to quickly restore Italian football to its former glory.
After three consecutive failed World Cup qualifying campaigns, Italy had no choice. This overhaul was not only aimed at correcting past mistakes, but also at developing a long-term plan to regain lost confidence.
