Summary of the spotted catfish farming model

On December 18th, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, in coordination with the People's Committee of Thuan Hoa commune, organized a workshop to summarize the model of raising spotted catfish in cages on the lake, linked with product consumption and ecological development.

Delegates visited and evaluated the model directly at the Mien 5A hydroelectric reservoir.

The model, implemented at Vuong Phat Cooperative, Hoa Bac village, has a scale of 460 m³/cage in the reservoir of the Song Mien 5A hydroelectric power plant. Started in August 2025, after 4 months of farming, the spotted catfish showed stable growth and development, with a survival rate of approximately 90% and an average weight of 0.48 kg/fish.

During the implementation process, the participating cooperative contributed 30% of the funding for fingerlings, 30% for feed, medicine, and chemicals for disease prevention and treatment, while receiving 100% of the products from the model. The Provincial Agricultural Extension Center provided 70% of the fingerlings, assigned technical staff to directly monitor, regularly inspect, and guide the process of caring for, managing, and preventing and controlling diseases in the fish stock.

After 4 months of rearing, the spotted catfish grew quickly, adapting well to the environmental conditions in the lake.

Through the workshop, delegates assessed the achievements, exchanged experiences, and proposed solutions to improve technical processes and strengthen the consumption linkages for spotted catfish. This is an important foundation for the locality to continue developing aquaculture in a sustainable direction, contributing to increasing income and improving the lives of people in Thuan Hoa commune, and will be replicated in other communes in the province.
