From the beginning of November, major retail and distribution businesses in Ho Chi Minh City began preparing goods for the peak shopping season at the end of the year and the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake 2025.
Mr. Lam Quoc Thanh, General Director of SATRA, a major supplier of food and consumer goods in the city, said that the value of essential goods stockpiled by the Satra retail system for the two months before, during, and after the Lunar New Year 2025 (including the Gregorian New Year) is estimated to increase by 15-20% compared to the Lunar New Year 2024. The company has proactively worked with suppliers to ensure prices and supply when there is demand for products in each sector.

Currently, Satramart supermarkets and Satrafoods convenience store chains have planned their Tet holiday stocking, focusing on food and groceries, and market-stabilizing goods, committing to preventing shortages and sudden price increases.
According to Mr. Thanh, for price-stabilized goods, reserves this year increased by 6-14% depending on the product group, while other items saw varying increases, ranging from 4-18%.
Specifically for fresh food items, including vegetables, fruits, various types of meat, and beer and soft drinks, reserves will increase significantly due to high demand during the Tet holiday.
SATRA's member companies, including Binh Dien Market and Vietnam Livestock Industry Corporation (VISSAN), are also required to plan for the preparation of vegetable, fruit, seafood, and livestock and poultry meat supplies to adequately provide for retail units within their systems.
Saigon Co.op, a major retailer, has also planned to stockpile goods worth 10 trillion VND for the Lunar New Year (Year of the Snake), an increase of 20-50% depending on the product category compared to a normal business month, to meet the needs of the city's residents. Priority items with large reserves include price-stabilized goods such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, pork, poultry, eggs, processed foods, vegetables and fruits, and seafood. Following these are other food and non-food items, and various Lunar New Year specialties.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang, Deputy General Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Commercial Cooperative Union (Saigon Co.op), said that the company has planned to coordinate with manufacturers and suppliers to increase reserves of essential goods by 30-40% compared to normal days.
According to forecasts, this year the product category catering to ordinary workers will see strong demand, so Saigon Co.op will focus on boosting supply. In addition to low prices, promotional programs will also be continuously implemented to stimulate purchasing power.
MM Mega Market also stated that it had worked with suppliers to stockpile large quantities of goods well in advance.
At Vissan, Mr. Nguyen Phuc Khoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated that the company is increasing production to supply nearly 1,200 tons of fresh food and 4,000 tons of processed food daily to more than 120,000 retail outlets nationwide. In addition, Vissan has also stockpiled an extra 10-20% of its production to prepare for peak shopping demands and to mitigate potential shortages or sudden supply disruptions.
For the Lunar New Year season alone, VISSAN expects to supply nearly 930 tons of fresh food and 3,700 tons of processed food to the market (an increase of about 5-8% compared to the Year of the Dragon). This year, factories and production facilities have prepared raw materials well in advance to meet consumer demand.

According to Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, in addition to inspecting and controlling the market for goods serving Tet, the Department of Industry and Trade also coordinates with relevant agencies, sectors, and distribution systems in the area to negotiate preferential discount policies, helping to reduce pressure on price increases, especially for essential goods during the peak Tet month.
Ho Chi Minh City is entering the year-end shopping season, with many consumer stimulus programs. The second phase of the "Shopping Season 2024" program started yesterday, November 15th, and will run until December 31st. This program has been positively received by consumers not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also throughout the Southeast region, as it coincides with a major shopping season when workers have a need to spend and shop for their families to celebrate the New Year.
By the end of October 2024, Ho Chi Minh City's total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue had grown by more than 10%, reaching VND 979,052 billion. Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu added that from now until the end of the year, the Department of Industry and Trade will focus on promoting trade to support businesses in expanding their consumer markets for the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.
