Light comes from simple things.
There are simple joys that are incomparable: an elderly person seeing their grandchild's face clearly for the first time after years of failing eyesight; a farmer confidently returning to the fields after their vision is restored; or a child no longer squinting in class.
Behind those seemingly "miraculous" moments lies the tireless dedication of the staff, doctors, and nurses of Thai Binh Eye Hospital ( Hung Yen province), who are quietly preserving and restoring sight to the community. Blindness not only diminishes the quality of life but also deprives patients of the ability to work, study, and live normally.

People come for eye examinations at Thai Binh Eye Hospital (Hung Yen province).
According to ophthalmologists, most current causes of blindness are preventable or treatable if detected early and intervened promptly. In implementing the National Strategy for Blindness Prevention and Control until 2030, the health sector focuses on three pillars: controlling preventable causes of blindness; promoting cataract surgery; and improving eye care for people with diabetes.
At Thai Binh Eye Hospital, these three pillars are implemented in a coordinated manner. Screening, early detection, and treatment of common eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, and retinal diseases are strengthened from the grassroots level.
With 120 staff members, including 29 doctors and many specialists with advanced degrees, the hospital continuously improves its professional capacity and invests in modern equipment. In 2025, the unit performed 47,375 examinations, 16,353 treatments, 9,292 surgeries, and nearly 95,000 procedures – figures that demonstrate the effectiveness of early disease control.
Cataracts, the leading cause of blindness in the elderly, are considered a priority. Modern phacoemulsification techniques are routinely implemented, helping patients recover their vision quickly and safely, with shorter hospital stays.
In 2025 alone, nearly 7,300 Phaco procedures were performed. Advanced techniques such as advanced Phaco, YAG laser treatment for posterior capsule opacification, and glaucoma control continue to be maintained, helping people access high-quality services right in their local area. Dr. Nguyen Quang Lich, Director of Thai Binh Eye Hospital (Hung Yen province), shared: "We don't just treat a patient; we aim to help people restore their vision, return to work and normal life. That is the true measure of professional effectiveness."
For diabetic patients, who are at high risk of blindness, regular screening and monitoring are especially important. Diabetic retinopathy progresses silently, and if not detected early, it can cause irreversible damage. Therefore, the hospital is strengthening fundus examinations, retinal imaging, laser treatment, and coordinated blood glucose control to limit complications.
Dr. Pham Thi Minh Phuong, Deputy Director of the hospital, often reminds young doctors in the operating room: "Each pair of eyes represents a life. We are not just operating on a patient; we are giving back light, giving back hope." This spirit is present in every surgical procedure and every post-operative instruction.
A doctor's joy is measured by the health of their patients.
Mr. Quach Thai Thuyen (Bac Thai Ninh commune, Hung Yen province), after undergoing cataract surgery on both eyes, emotionally said: "My eyesight has been gradually deteriorating for several years, making daily life very difficult. I thought I would have to accept it. Unexpectedly, after the surgery, I can see clearly the faces of my children and grandchildren, and familiar objects. I am truly grateful to the doctors."
Along with its professional expertise, Thai Binh Eye Hospital is promoting digital transformation: implementing electronic medical records, a system for storing and managing images, delivering results via QR code, shortening waiting times, and improving patient satisfaction.
In the midst of modern life, where light is often taken for granted, there are still those who quietly protect this precious resource. From controlling preventable blindness and promoting cataract surgery to providing eye care for people with diabetes, Thai Binh Eye Hospital is contributing daily to reducing the rate of preventable blindness, preserving vision, and improving the quality of life for the people.
