Passing on the Quan Ho heritage
The Quan Ho folk song heritage of Bac Ninh is like a treasure passed down from generation to generation. The artisans regularly teach their children, grandchildren, and Quan Ho enthusiasts within their families, while also connecting with the local community to open classes, especially during the summer, for the younger generation in their hometown.

The Quan Ho folk singing class organized by the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theatre in the summer of 2025 attracted a large number of teenagers and children from the province.
Recognizing their responsibility to preserve the Quan Ho folk song heritage, for many years, the Hoai Thi Quan Ho Club in Lien Bao (Tien Du district) has not only focused on teaching the song to its members but also opened summer classes. In 2025, the club's summer Quan Ho singing class for young people started in early June, with over 20 teenagers and children from the village participating in singing lessons on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings at the village communal house. For over 10 years, with the dedication and enthusiasm of experienced and knowledgeable artists such as Nguyen Thi Lanh and Bui Thi Sinh, hundreds of teenagers and children in the village have been taught Quan Ho melodies, both ancient and modern, helping the younger generations of Hoai Thi have a beneficial and practical summer and learn to appreciate the value of their homeland's heritage.
Since 2009, when Quan Ho folk singing was inscribed by UNESCO as a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, driven by her love for Quan Ho and her desire to pass it on to the younger generation of her homeland, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thai has established and gathered children from three villages: Lung Giang, Lung Son, and Due Dong (Lim town) to teach Quan Ho to teenagers and children. The effective operation of the Quan Ho singing class for young children has attracted an increasing number of participants. In 2018, the Lim Town Children's Quan Ho Club was established, attracting over 30 children. Today, it has more than 50 members, many of whom, aged 8 to 10, are outstanding artistic talents in their schools and classes.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thai, Head of the Children's Quan Ho Club in Lim town, shared: "During the summer, the club continuously teaches the children every day of the week. To instill in the children a passion for Quan Ho and encourage them to diligently practice the songs, it's not only the dedication and enthusiasm of the club's leadership, including senior singers Nguyen Thi Lieu and Nguyen Thi Loi, but also the significant contributions of the club's musicians, Nguyen Van Ngoc, Do Ba Hieu, and Nguyen The Bep, who provide the initial rhythm and beat for the children in learning Quan Ho."
Thanks to the dedication of previous generations, many children in the Lim Town Children's Quan Ho Club have won first, second, and third prizes at the provincial "Quan Ho Young Talents Singing Competition". At this competition in 2025, the club had two 10-year-old children, Nguyen Phuong Quyen and Nguyen Hai Yen, who won second prize.
Not only are clubs and localities actively teaching Quan Ho folk singing to children and teenagers during the summer, but recently the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater also organized a Quan Ho folk singing class for young people and children in 2025 with nearly 200 participants. To improve the quality of these Quan Ho singing classes for young people, from the beginning of the summer, the Professional Affairs Department (Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater) planned to guide Quan Ho clubs in the province to organize Quan Ho singing classes for young people and children. According to the Professional Affairs Department's assessment, this year, the number of children and teenagers participating in Quan Ho singing classes in clubs throughout the province is higher, especially the percentage of male students registering has increased compared to previous years, which is encouraging in the teaching of Quan Ho. From these young Quan Ho seeds, it will signal the next generation in the clubs to have a balanced male-female ratio in the future.
From one generation to the next, the love for Quan Ho folk singing has naturally formed in the lifestyle of each family and community. From the Quan Ho clubs for young children that have sprung up in the villages of Bac Ninh, to the free classes that allow children to understand the beauty of Quan Ho through the love and passion of the older generations of singers... all of this has made Quan Ho folk singing strong and flourishing. In the locality, children immerse themselves in Quan Ho during the summer, and during the school year, they also have Quan Ho singing lessons. Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs have been included in the curriculum of primary and secondary schools throughout the province since the 2011-2012 school year. Since then, cultural activities during holidays and anniversaries at schools often feature Quan Ho songs sung by young singers.
Thanks to the passion and enthusiasm of the artisans, along with the dedication and responsibility of cultural workers, the transmission of this heritage has expanded in various forms and scales. The Quan Ho singing movement is no longer confined to Bac Ninh province but is increasingly developing and spreading to many communities in provinces and cities nationwide, as well as internationally. To date, Bac Ninh, from its 44 original Quan Ho villages, has expanded to 261 practicing Quan Ho villages and nearly 400 Quan Ho clubs. The respect for Quan Ho, from families to communities, has helped the Quan Ho tradition flow and reach far.
