Construction begins on the new Phong Chau bridge.

On the afternoon of December 21st, in Phung Nguyen commune (Lam Thao district, Phu Tho province), the Ministry of Transport held a ceremony to launch the construction of the new Phong Chau bridge project.

Minister of Transport Tran Hong Minh, Lieutenant General Nguyen Trong Binh - Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Tho province Bui Van Quang, and leaders of departments and agencies of the province attended the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Transport Tran Hong Minh said that the collapse of Phong Chau bridge due to Typhoon Yagi caused significant damage to people and property, disrupting traffic on National Highway 32C.

Addressing the consequences of the previous incident and accelerating the investment and construction progress of the Phong Chau bridge is an urgent task of great importance. Therefore, General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh have decisively directed and demanded the completion of the new Phong Chau bridge under an emergency construction order, with the project to be put into operation in 2025.

Regarding the construction contractor, the Minister requested Truong Son Construction Corporation to demonstrate the highest sense of responsibility, mobilize sufficient human resources, financial resources, and equipment to carry out the construction, strive to shorten the project completion time, ensure quality, and quickly connect the transportation network in the area, creating the most favorable conditions for people to travel.

The Minister of Transport also requested Phu Tho province and relevant units to closely coordinate with the Thang Long Project Management Board, continue to create favorable conditions, promptly resolve difficulties and obstacles, and ensure security and order so that the investor and contractors can ensure the project's progress and efficiency.

According to the plan, the new Phong Chau bridge is expected to be completed on December 31, 2025. However, Minister Tran Hong Minh requested that the relevant units strive to complete it by December 22, 2025.

Also at the ceremony, representatives of the investor, the Thang Long Project Management Board, Ministry of Transport, stated that the urgent construction of the new bridge aims to promptly address the collapse of the old Phong Chau bridge on National Highway 32C, resolve traffic disruptions, mitigate the consequences of storms and floods, and quickly reconnect the transportation network in the area.

The people are facilitated to travel across both banks of the river connecting Tam Nong district with Lam Thao district, promoting socio-economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the area.

According to the design, the project starts at Km00 (approximately Km 21+50, National Highway 32C bypassing Viet Tri City), located in Phung Nguyen commune (Lam Thao district) and ends at Km 0+625 (approximately Km 18+55), located in Van Xuan commune (Tam Nong district).

Manpower and equipment have been mobilized to the construction site to build the new Phong Chau bridge.

The new Phong Chau Bridge has a total length of nearly 653m, accommodating 4 lanes of motorized vehicles. The bridge was constructed using reinforced concrete beams and prestressed reinforced concrete.

The main bridge section consists of 3 continuous girder spans, balanced cantilever construction, reinforced concrete abutments and piers, and bored pile foundations. The approach roads connecting the two ends of the bridge are designed to meet the standards of a Class III road in flat terrain, with a design speed of 80 km/h.
