According to Dexerto , a Twitter user recently discovered a new setting in the Canary beta version of the Microsoft Edge browser. Dubbed 'Edge for Gamers', this option, when enabled, redirects users to Microsoft's add-on store, and also adds Twitch and Discord to the browser's sidebar.
Microsoft has long strived to make its browser more popular. However, this Chromium-based browser has struggled to become the default browser on Windows 10 and 11 computers, despite recently adding new AI features from OpenAI and ChatGPT.
New options for gamers on the Edge Canary browser.
The reason behind the appearance of the 'Edge for Gamers' option, or its purpose beyond integrating Discord and Twitch into the browser, is unclear. However, this move suggests Microsoft is directly challenging Opera in the gaming-focused browser market.
The Opera browser (which also runs on Chromium) is offering a version called Opera GX, designed specifically for video game players on Microsoft Windows and macOS. Microsoft's latest move could be a plan to integrate a gamer version or test features for a future secondary browser.
Additionally, Opera acquired game creation software GameMaker in 2021, further strengthening its portfolio of game-focused software.
