According to Dexerto , a Twitter user recently found a new setting in the Canary beta version of Microsoft Edge browser. Dubbed 'Edge for Gamers', this option, when enabled, will redirect users to Microsoft's add-on store, in addition to adding Twitch and Discord apps to the browser's sidebar.
Microsoft has long been trying to make its browser more popular, but the Chromium-based browser has struggled to become the default browser on Windows 10 and 11 computers, despite recently adding new AI features from OpenAI and ChatGPT.
New options for gamers on Edge Canary browser
It's unclear what's behind the 'Edge for Gamers' option, or what it does other than integrate Discord and Twitch apps into the browser, but the move shows Microsoft is going head-to-head with Opera in the gaming-focused browser space.
The Opera browser (also based on Chromium) is offering a version called Opera GX, designed specifically for gamers on Microsoft Windows and macOS. Microsoft's new move could be planning to integrate a gamer-friendly version or testing features for a future spin-off browser.
Additionally, Opera acquired game creation software GameMaker in 2021, adding muscle to its gaming-focused software portfolio.
