Growing chrysanthemums with solar power

Chrysanthemum is a popular flower in Da Lat. The greenhouses that glow brightly at night, with thousands of sparkling lights in the flower garden, have become a characteristic of the highland flower industry.

Growing chrysanthemums, during the growth period of the plant, it is necessary to turn on the light from 8 to 10 hours every night. This is a mandatory technique because if not turned on, the flower will only bloom when it is 10 - 15 cm tall. Turning on the light at night helps the plant grow taller, lengthen its stem, and meet consumer standards in the market. Therefore, the cost of electricity to light up chrysanthemums is also an important expense for flower farmers. And, a farmer has grown chrysanthemums using solar energy, completely reducing the cost of paying for electricity.

Mr. Dinh Quang Trung, a farmer in Group 35, Lac Duong town, Lac Duong district, has been involved in growing chrysanthemums for many years. Mr. Trung knows very well the need for lights at night for chrysanthemums. Therefore, when building an additional greenhouse to grow chrysanthemums, farmers also calculated that the cost of electricity was too high, affecting the income of flower growers. And, farmer Dinh Quang Trung decided to change. In 2022, when building a greenhouse system to grow chrysanthemums, Mr. Trung did not install an electrical system connected to the national grid, buying electricity from the electricity industry, but proactively installed a rooftop solar power system right on the greenhouse to grow chrysanthemums. This is a rather bold decision of the farmer because in the area, no household has invested a large amount of money to use solar power.

After two years of cultivation, Mr. Dinh Quang Trung has confirmed that it is completely possible to grow chrysanthemums using a solar power system. With an area of 4 sao of greenhouse, Mr. Trung installed 28 solar panels. The electricity is installed directly on the roof of the chrysanthemum growing house, and the electricity is stored in a UPS located in the warehouse. When it is dark, the system turns on, using electricity from the UPS to light up 450 light bulbs to illuminate the entire garden.

Mr. Bui Van Le, who directly takes care of the chrysanthemum garden, said that for normal farmers, lighting and watering the chrysanthemum garden costs about 6 - 8 million VND/month. But for Mr. Dinh Quang Trung's garden, there is absolutely no electricity system connected to the grid, the entire garden uses an independent rooftop solar power system. During the day, when there is sunlight, the energy is stored in the power storage system, and used at night. The garden's rooftop solar power system can both store and use during the day.

“Currently, the garden uses 450 light bulbs and a three-phase irrigation pump system. The solar energy system is very sensitive, even with low light, the storage system is still capable of providing light. Since I have been managing and directly operating the system, I have not seen any problems and the chrysanthemum garden is of very good quality, with tall plants and beautiful flowers,” said Mr. Bui Van Le. In addition to using a solar power system, Mr. Dinh Quang Trung also uses all the light bulbs in the garden as energy-saving LED bulbs. LED bulbs use very little electricity, have waterproof sockets, so they last for two to three years, are light, and rarely break, making them very economical for flower growers.

Mr. Bui Van Le also assessed that normally, on sunny days, the energy from the battery system stored in the UPS can be used to continuously light up for 10 hours. If it rains, it can still be enough to light up for 6 hours, ensuring the growth cycle of the chrysanthemum plant. During the two years of cultivation, Mr. Dinh Quang Trung's chrysanthemum garden did not use grid electricity at all, only used rooftop solar power and still achieved very good results. This is also a success from the boldness of the farmers and the support of the Department of Industry and Trade of Lam Dong province.

Mr. Dinh Quang Trung has coordinated with the Department of Industry and Trade to pilot a model of using rooftop solar power to serve agricultural production. The Department of Industry and Trade partially supported the cost to accompany Mr. Dinh Quang Trung in implementing the model. The Department's funding also contributed to helping him become more confident in his goal of growing chrysanthemums using solar energy. Ms. Cao Thi Thanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade also said that supporting farmers to implement models of using clean energy to develop agriculture is a goal of the Department of Industry and Trade. The success of the model of growing chrysanthemums using rooftop solar power by farmer Dinh Quang Trung shows the success of this promising direction. The Department of Industry and Trade hopes that in the future, there will be more agricultural enterprises and households developing models of using solar energy in production, reducing the need for grid electricity, increasing income for farmers as well as protecting the green environment.
