The Israel Defense Forces have issued an extensive evacuation order for Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip of Khan Younis. This is one of the largest evacuations in the 10-month-long conflict, following the return of Israeli tanks to the eastern part of the city.
Relentless attack
Announcements posted on social media platform X, as well as text and audio messages sent to people's phones on August 11th, emphasized the need for people to quickly evacuate to the newly established humanitarian zone. According to Philippe Lazzarini, Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, people in Gaza are trapped, lack shelter, and need comprehensive support. The Israeli military stated that in the past 24 hours they had attacked approximately 30 military targets belonging to Hamas forces, including military bases, anti-tank missile launch sites, and weapons depots.
Following an airstrike on a school converted into a refugee shelter in northern Gaza (killing around 100 people), Israel launched another airstrike near the Khan Younis market, killing four and injuring many others. According to the United Nations, most of Gaza's 2.3 million inhabitants have been displaced, while much of the infrastructure has been almost completely destroyed, turning the area into a desolate wasteland with no safe havens remaining.
Meanwhile, according to Lebanese military sources, two members of Hezbollah in Lebanon were killed in Israeli airstrikes in several areas of southern Lebanon on August 11. Israeli forces conducted six airstrikes targeting five towns and villages, and also launched artillery attacks on eight towns and villages in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah also attacked several Israeli positions. Clashes between Hezbollah forces in Lebanon and Israel have intensified in recent days.
The Israeli military also launched a barrage of rockets at a Syrian military base in the Tel Al-Jabiya area of Daraa province in southern Syria. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), black smoke rose from the site near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and ambulances were dispatched to the scene. SOHR added that the military base belonged to the Syrian government forces but provided no further details. Israel has not commented on the incident.
Iran's statement
According to Axio news agency, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant informed US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that Iran was preparing for a large-scale attack on Israel. In a statement on August 12, the Israeli Defense Minister confirmed this information. The two ministers discussed operational coordination, strategy, and the readiness of the Israeli military against threats from Iran.
Secretary Lloyd Austin also ordered the deployment of a U.S. guided-missile submarine to the Middle East. The public announcement of the submarine deployment plan is a rare move by the Pentagon, given that the nuclear-powered submarine USS Georgia was already present in the Mediterranean last July. The U.S. military had previously announced the deployment of additional fighter jets and warships to the Middle East as Washington works to support Israel in strengthening its defenses.
