On October 27th at the White House, US President Joe Biden met with Wang Yi (Member of the Politburo , Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China, and Foreign Minister of China). The meeting took place during Wang Yi's visit to the US from October 26-28.

According to a White House statement, during the meeting, President Biden emphasized that both Washington and Beijing need to responsibly manage competition between the two sides and maintain open lines of communication. For his part, Wang said the visit aimed to promote a bilateral summit in San Francisco, California, and to prevent further deterioration of bilateral relations, according to Xinhua.

Are US and Chinese leaders about to meet?

Wang's visit marked the first time a Chinese foreign minister had visited Washington D.C. since 2018. During this visit, Wang held talks with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken twice, on October 26 and 27. Following the first meeting, Beijing stated that "the two sides had a deep exchange of views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern in a constructive atmosphere," according to AP. The U.S. State Department said the two foreign ministers discussed "areas of disagreement" and "areas of cooperation."

Additionally, Wang also met with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on October 27. The two discussed key issues in bilateral relations. Both sides reaffirmed their desire for further high-level diplomatic activities, including working together toward a meeting between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco in November.

Following these meetings, the White House announced that both sides were "working toward" a face-to-face meeting between the US and Chinese leaders on the sidelines of the APEC summit, scheduled to take place in San Francisco from November 15-17. Additionally, AP quoted a US official as saying that the two leaders had agreed to meet, but had not yet agreed on the exact date and location of the meeting.

"America's strong desire"

Wang's visit to the U.S. follows a series of bilateral diplomatic contacts in recent months aimed at salvaging rapidly deteriorating relations after the U.S. shot down a suspected spy balloon in China in February, according to Reuters. Most of these contacts were conducted at the request of the U.S.

Chinese experts believe that Wang's visit took place at the invitation of Blinken, and that Wang's series of talks with senior US officials demonstrated the strong desire of the US to both stabilize and strengthen broad-based communication with China, according to the Global Times.

Furthermore, expert Yun Sun, Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center (USA), believes that the upcoming meeting between President Biden and President Xi will bring much-needed stability to the relationship between the two countries. "The world needs the U.S. and China to follow a rational path and stabilize their relationship, giving the region and the world a more secure status quo," AP quoted Sun as commenting.

The US-China relationship began to strain in 2018 when the Trump administration imposed heavy tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods. This relationship has further deteriorated due to a range of issues, including human rights, the South China Sea, Taiwan, technology, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
