Dongfeng has just announced a remarkable breakthrough in internal combustion engine technology, with its new Mach Power 2.0T hybrid achieving a thermal efficiency of up to 45.5%, according to certification from CATARC Huacheng, an independent organization in China that verifies the technical claims of automakers. This result was confirmed on May 22nd and widely publicized last week.
The Dongfeng Mach Power 2.0T hybrid engine achieves a thermal efficiency of 45.5%.
This 2.0L turbocharged engine was developed for hybrid SUVs and large vehicles, where the balance between performance, towing capacity, and fuel efficiency is increasingly demanding. With 45.5% thermal efficiency, Dongfeng's engine is close to the leading group in the global hybrid field, where around 45% is gradually becoming the new standard.

At the heart of the engine is a new combustion chamber architecture called MAKC, developed by Dongfeng. This design focuses on optimizing the combustion process and controlling knocking. The engine uses a long-stroke configuration with a piston stroke/cylinder diameter ratio of 1.29, resulting in more stable and efficient fuel combustion.
Furthermore, the 350-bar high-pressure direct fuel injection system, combined with a high-energy ignition system, allows the engine to maintain a high compression ratio while ensuring stable performance under various operating conditions. An integrated exhaust gas recirculation system is also incorporated to reduce combustion chamber temperature, thereby minimizing knocking and improving fuel consumption by approximately 3% to 10% depending on operating conditions.
The hybrid technology race among Chinese automakers.
Beyond optimizing the combustion process, Dongfeng also focuses on reducing internal mechanical losses in the engine. Electronically controlled variable fuel pumps help reduce unnecessary energy waste, while critical components are coated with diamond-shaped carbon to reduce friction.

Other Chinese automakers are also accelerating their development of hybrid powertrains, continuously improving efficiency and performance to gain an advantage in the next-generation SUV segment. |
The variable turbocharging system helps maintain stable performance even under harsh conditions, such as operating at altitudes up to 2,500 meters or during long-distance travel under heavy load. According to Dongfeng, these overall improvements expand the high-performance operating range by approximately 30% compared to the previous generation.
In the increasingly competitive Chinese hybrid market, thermal efficiency around 45% is becoming the new benchmark. Manufacturers like Geely and Chery are also accelerating their development of their own hybrid powertrains, continuously improving efficiency and performance to gain an advantage in the next-generation SUV segment.
