Prestigious American universities are tightening their belts.

The layoffs directly impact the administrative department of this prestigious academic institution. A school representative stated, "As the range of federal research funding shrinks, the operational structure surrounding it must also change accordingly."

This move comes as the Trump administration takes steps to cut federal funding for universities due to a series of deep disagreements. These issues include pro-Palestinian protests against Israel's (a US ally) attack on Gaza, transgender policies, climate initiatives, and diversity programs.

Prior to the funding cuts, human rights activists repeatedly expressed concerns about the potential infringements on freedom of speech, academic freedom, and the fairness of due process in universities. In fact, in some cases, judges have ruled that the Trump administration must reinstate frozen federal funding to universities.

According to a February report by Johns Hopkins, the total funding the university receives for long-term research projects from the federal government has decreased by more than $500 million in 2025. This is partly due to a 43% reduction in federal research funding and a 28% decrease in the number of approved projects compared to the previous year.

To bridge this financial gap, in early June, Johns Hopkins University had to allocate $60 million annually for the next two years to establish a new research fund. This is not the first time the university has been affected. Last year, Johns Hopkins closed a Baltimore campus, canceled numerous international programs, and laid off 2,222 employees, furloughing 107 others.

Johns Hopkins University is ranked the 7th best university in the US according to the 2026 US News rankings, with an acceptance rate of approximately 6%. The university is also in the top 16 globally , according to Times Higher Education.

Johns Hopkins is particularly world-renowned in the fields of medicine, public health, nursing, and advanced science and engineering.
