Lying on your stomach, lying on your side for too long can cause many wrinkles on the face, especially for women after menopause.
Lack of sleep or sleeping in the wrong position can affect life expectancy, making eyes dark circles, rough skin. Recently, experts said that sleeping position also affects the degree of skin aging and the appearance of wrinkles on the face.
According to expert Emma Coleman, head of clinical practice Bespoke Aesthetics, UK, waking up with a puffy face in some people is due to the fact that during sleep, fluid is deposited on the face.
She said lying on the side, lying on the stomach can cause more fluid to accumulate. Many people who lie face down wake up with facial marks or a sensation similar to a toothache. This can cause wrinkles in the long run. Meanwhile, lying on your back will reduce this condition. Not only British experts, the American Academy of Dermatology also recommends that people lie on their backs to avoid premature facial aging.
Other causes of puffiness and wrinkles are sleeping habits with makeup on, drinking too much alcohol, eating too much salt, or hormonal changes. These bumps are temporary and should go away in an hour or so.
However, as people age, the marks from bed sheets and pillows on the face take a long time to disappear.
“At this stage, the face is puffy as if it has just come out of the blanket, which can last until noon. Worse still, too much pressure on one side of the face, in the same position, also causes wrinkles,” explains Ms. Coleman.
Dr. Amanda Wong Powell, clinical director of Courthouse Clinics, said that as people age, the face becomes less symmetrical. Basically, wrinkles are repetitive movements. Over time, the habits of raising eyebrows, frowning create marks that cannot be erased. Because people can't completely eliminate facial emotions, Dr. Powell recommends sleeping in the right position to reduce facial wrinkles.
“When I look at patients, I can absolutely tell which side they sleep on. For example, more wrinkles on the right cheek means they were lying on the right side," she explained.
Coleman even said she can predict the preferred sleeping position of 90% of patients just by looking at their faces. She said that after menopause, women sleeping in the same position for three to six months can create permanent wrinkles in the face and chest area.
“There is a lot of evidence that sleeping on one side too much can cause nodular dermatitis, a common inflammation of the cartilage of the upper ear. It manifests as small, tender bumps or round lumps,” says Dr. Adam Friedmann, a consultant dermatologist at Harley.
According to experts, the use of inappropriate mattress also affects sleep. Mattresses that are too hard can cause back pain, causing people to unconsciously turn into bad posture, thereby causing premature aging.
“Gone are the days when people thought the harder the mattress, the better. Now, I recommend choosing a soft mattress that is comfortable, but still enough to support your back, ensuring a good sleeping position," says Sammy Margo, sleep specialist and physiotherapist.
She explained, women who are small, have a tight waist, or lie on their side need to use soft cushions to fit their hips. Basically, the mattress needs to effectively support the spine and must be replaced every 8 years.
