In Dong Nai , a 33-year-old man was bitten by a stray dog but did not get vaccinated. Four months later, he developed symptoms of rabies and did not survive.
Man dies four months after being bitten by a stray dog.
On July 31st, the Dong Nai Department of Health recorded a case of rabies, stating that the man had been bitten on the wrist by a dog, resulting in minor bleeding. People advised him to get a rabies vaccine, but he refused because he "didn't have the money."
On July 27th, he exhibited symptoms of fear of water and wind, and choked while drinking. His wife took him to the Long Khanh General Hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred him to Cho Ray Hospital, where he died two days later. Tests confirmed the patient was positive for the rabies virus.
The Dong Nai Center for Disease Control conducted an epidemiological investigation and noted that the patient's wife and 4-year-old son had contact with him while he was experiencing rabies symptoms, so they encouraged him to get vaccinated against rabies.
Two weeks ago, a 36-year-old homeowner in Trang Bom district also contracted rabies and died six months after being bitten by his pet dog.
Rabies is currently incurable. Once symptoms appear, 100% of cases are fatal. The incubation period is complex, mostly lasting 7 to 10 days, or even extending to several years, making it difficult to control, monitor, and treat. The only preventive measure is vaccination against rabies immediately after being bitten by a dog.
