Regarding the content of the letter with the theme "Imagine you are the ocean"
This year's contest requires: "IMAGINE YOU ARE THE OCEAN. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of and protect you."
This is an excellent and timely topic, with the potential for extensive discussion or detailed exploration. With this theme, contestants can freely develop their imagination and knowledge; they also have the opportunity to express their thoughts and suggestions for protecting and sustainably caring for the ocean environment.
The competition's theme is linked to the goal of "Conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources" within the United Nations' system of 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
For this topic, students need to understand what the ocean is and be able to describe the basic current state of the ocean, highlighting pressing issues, most notably marine pollution. The entries can provide an overview of the pollution situation or delve into a specific aspect or impact, such as the risk of losing rare marine species due to pollution, the shrinking of coral reefs, etc. Most importantly, students need to express their thoughts on this situation and propose feasible solutions to improve it.
The essay prompt asks candidates to "imagine you are the ocean," but they can assume they are the entire vast ocean, or a part or component living within the ocean, directly related to the ocean's ecological chain, for example, an individual turtle, or a particularly polluted area of the sea...
Regarding the outline of the letter, the introduction should include a greeting and an introduction to the person you will choose to impersonate, stating "who I am."
The letter's beginning also needs a recipient. This recipient should be someone who shares your vision, capable of widely disseminating the letter's message, or someone with a strong social influence, capable of making decisions to improve the issues addressed in the letter. The recipient could also represent a force that plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of the ocean, such as environmental organizations, the United Nations, or global youth groups.
The letter's body should include an introduction to the topic. In this section, students need to address the following: the reason for writing the letter; the current situation; their own thoughts; and solutions for sustainable ocean protection. The letter should convey a message based on the chosen character, and that message will be conveyed in this body section.
The letter concludes with your best wishes to the recipient, concisely summarizing the message and expressing bright hopes for the future. The letter should end with phrases expressing appreciation, affection, love, etc. The author should also sign their name at the end.
