For the first time in history, England conceded three goals to an African opponent in a single match. Furthermore, this disappointing result ended the Three Lions' unbeaten streak against African teams at 21 games (15 wins, 6 draws). This was also England's first defeat under manager Thomas Tuchel.
"Stunning," "Shameful" are the words the British media used to describe the defeat of coach Tuchel's team, despite it being only a friendly match.
England suffered a humiliating defeat at home. |
Despite a decent start with Harry Kane opening the scoring in the 7th minute after an assist from Anthony Gordon, England quickly revealed weaknesses in their defense and a lack of creativity in attack.
Senegal, with their fast-paced style of play and relentless pressure, didn't take long to bring the game back to a tie. In the 40th minute, Ismaila Sarr beat Kyle Walker on the right flank before receiving a cross from Nicolas Jackson to score the equalizer.
In the second half, despite Tuchel making three substitutions before the 60th minute to try and improve the game, England remained passive against the opponent's counter-attacks.
In the 62nd minute, Habib Diarra capitalized on a precise long pass from Kalidou Koulibaly to finish subtly through the legs of goalkeeper Dean Henderson, giving Senegal a 2-1 lead.
England launched a full-scale attack in the final minutes and nearly equalized when Jude Bellingham put the ball into the net. However, referee Stephanie Frappart disallowed the goal, ruling that Levi Colwill had handled the ball.
While the home team was busy searching for an equalizer, Senegal delivered the finishing blow in injury time with a goal from Cheikh Sabaly, securing an impressive 3-1 victory.
This result not only extended Senegal's unbeaten run to 16 matches (11 wins, 5 draws), but also served as a wake-up call for England as World Cup qualifiers resume in September. With their first defeat under Tuchel, the "Three Lions" clearly have a lot of work to do if they want to end their trophy drought.
