"I don't understand why the players' families have to be present right from the start of the tournament. Then there are the issues related to travel and hotel bookings. All of that becomes a topic of discussion within the team," Matthaus said.
The German legend further revealed that there was an instance where a player was unhappy that a teammate's mother was arranged to travel on a private charter flight, while his own family had to travel on commercial flights.
According to Matthaus, although these conflicts were not leaked to the media during the tournament, they still significantly affected the team's morale. He believes that the German team paid too much attention to off-field issues instead of focusing entirely on the goal of winning the World Cup .

The 64-year-old legend also expressed his bew astonishment at the family members' early arrival at the team's headquarters. He noted that the team had only been in the US for less than two weeks but had already taken consecutive days off for family members, causing a distraction from their focus.
Before Matthaus exposed the incident, the German national team was already embroiled in controversy regarding their poor performance in the penalty shootout against Paraguay in the Round of 16 of the World Cup on June 30th. According to Bild , many players refused or were afraid to take the sixth penalty kick.
Ultimately, Jonathan Tah, a center-back who had never taken a penalty in his career, took responsibility but missed, causing Germany to be eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.
