Ukraine is reportedly running out of ATACMS long-range missile systems, supplied by the US, in its arsenal amid Russia's growing dominance on the battlefield.
The Associated Press, citing unnamed U.S. and Ukrainian officials, reported that the U.S. had sent Ukraine a total of approximately 40 long-range ATACMS missiles. However, officials said Ukraine had used up all of its ATACMS missiles by January.
Ukrainian and US officials have not commented on the information.
The U.S. military's ATACMS long-range missile system fired from an unspecified location in South Korea in May 2022.
This information emerged as the US resumed military aid to Kyiv following talks with a Ukrainian delegation in Saudi Arabia on March 11. It is currently unclear whether the US will continue providing ATACMS to Ukraine after resuming military aid.
Ukraine first received older, shorter-range versions of the ATACMS in the fall of 2023. By the spring of 2024, the US began supplying improved models with a range of up to 300 km. At that time, Kyiv was only permitted to use these missiles to strike targets within Ukrainian territory controlled by Russia.

However, in November 2024, former US President Joe Biden eased restrictions on Ukraine's use of ATACMS, allowing Kyiv to use them to strike military targets deep within Russian territory. Following this approval, Ukraine launched a series of missile attacks on Russian airports, military facilities, and arms factories.
In December 2024, The New York Times also reported that Ukraine had nearly run out of ATACMS supplies and was limiting its use of the weapon.
Before taking office, US President Donald Trump publicly and strongly criticized the Biden administration's decision to allow Ukraine to launch long-range attacks on Russian territory using ATACMS weapons. This raises questions about Ukraine's ability to continue using ATACMS to strike deep inside Russian territory, even if Washington transfers more missiles to Kyiv.
