Hung Yen is a province located in the heart of the Red River Delta, boasting a diverse range of historical and cultural relics. It ranks third nationwide in the number of national-level relics, with a total of 175 sites.
In toponymy, "Hung" means prosperity, and "Yen" means peace, implying a peaceful and prosperous land. For over 550 years, Hung Yen has been famous since the Trinh-Nguyen conflict period, particularly for Pho Hien, which was a major trading port in the North. Ships sailing up the Red River to Thang Long ("Ke Cho") had to stop at Pho Hien to wait for permits, making it a bustling hub. Chinese, Japanese, and Westerners all came there to trade. Hung Yen's fame from the Trinh-Nguyen conflict period was due to Pho Hien; a popular saying goes, "First is the capital, second is Pho Hien."
