A delegation from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism visited and surveyed the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee Base Area historical site.
The Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee Base, nestled amidst the vast melaleuca forest of My Phuoc, was classified as a National Historical and Cultural Monument by the Ministry of Culture, Information and Sports (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ) in 1992.
According to documents at the historical site, during the resistance against French colonialism and the early stages of the resistance against the US, the My Phuoc melaleuca forest was chosen as a base for revolutionary forces. In January 1968, the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee Base was moved from Gia Hoa commune, My Xuyen district (now part of Can Tho city) to the My Phuoc melaleuca forest. All the offices of the Provincial Party Committee Base, such as the meeting hall, offices, dining hall, and barracks, were constructed from readily available wood and leaves, scattered throughout an area of nearly 100 hectares.
The base area was surrounded by a complex network of canals and dense vegetation. This rugged terrain was very suitable for our guerrilla warfare tactics, creating a strategic advantage for attacking Chau Thanh, Soc Trang, Nga Nam, Thanh Tri, or retreating into the deep areas of Hong Dan and Phuoc Long (now part of Ca Mau province), and also effectively preventing enemy sweeps into the U Minh region.
Due to its strategic location, the enemy implemented a tight blockade with four outposts: Cai Trau, My Phuoc, Tam Soc, and Xeo Ly. Simultaneously, they frequently launched large-scale sweeps, including artillery and air raids. They dropped thousands of tons of bombs and ammunition in an attempt to destroy the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee Base, but all their efforts failed. The Base remained safe and survived until the complete liberation of South Vietnam. This is a vivid historical testament to the unwavering loyalty of the people of My Phuoc commune, who always believed in the Party, and who wholeheartedly protected and supported the comrades in the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee, enabling them to overcome countless difficulties and challenges, organize many important conferences, and issue numerous resolutions leading the army and people of Soc Trang from one victory to another, bringing the revolutionary cause to complete victory.

Based on those documents, we followed the group of visitors to explore the various sections of the historical site, such as the Memorial Temple, the Exhibition Area, the Monument commemorating the nation's heroes, and the recreated area of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee's base during the resistance war… With each step under the cool, fresh canopy of melaleuca trees, we were increasingly impressed by our ancestors' enduring struggle in the two resistance wars. Like the melaleuca trees of our homeland, the "green shoots" of revolution are always nurtured and grow in the protective embrace of the people of My Phuoc.
The Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee Base Area National Monument is managed by the Soc Trang Provincial Museum, with a total area of approximately 310 hectares under its direct management. The site is divided into two areas: one area, covering 281 hectares, includes the reconstruction of historical relics such as the Standing Committee building, the Provincial Party Committee meeting hall, the canteen, the bomb shelter, the freshwater reservoir, the Liaison Office, the Cryptography Office, the Provincial Party Committee Office, the Chief of the Provincial Party Committee Office's office, and the Economic and Finance Office; the other area, covering 20 hectares, is the administrative center, including the memorial temple, the triple-arched gate, the stele house, the youth activity center, the exhibition hall, the administration building, and the staff quarters. In 2022, the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee Base Area National Monument was recognized as a provincial-level tourist destination.
According to Mr. Nguyen Chien Chinh, Head of the Management Board of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee's Base Area Relic Site, the site receives an average of over 13,000 visitors annually. The majority are students, members of various organizations, and socio-political groups who come to visit, learn about their roots, and explore history. The unit maintains good service for visitors, with guided tours tailored to different visitor groups. Simultaneously, it collaborates with the Professional Services Department of the Provincial Museum to organize thematic exhibitions during holidays and festivals. Furthermore, the Management Board has developed social media pages to promote and introduce the relic site, yielding positive results.
Visiting the historical site, tourists can also immerse themselves in the unique nature of Southern Vietnam with its system of canals and waterways, and the natural ecosystem perfectly preserved under the vast melaleuca forest canopy. Visiting the base during the historic autumn days, visitors will hear stories of the land and people of My Phuoc, brave during the war, dynamic in economic development, and working together to create the prosperous and livable countryside of today. Visit the base to see the "land blossoming" with "seeds" nurtured from revolutionary traditions and the sacrifices of countless generations of ancestors. Be proud, preserve, and continue the legacy!
