On June 6, at the United Nations headquarters in New York (USA), the Executive Council of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) held a dialogue with UN member countries to exchange lessons learned on development through overcoming crises, turning national aspirations into concrete results.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent at the United Nations, on the occasion of 45 years of Vietnam-UN relations, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, was invited to be the keynote speaker at the session to share Vietnam's successful lessons.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang said the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down the economic development process, exacerbated many other challenges, and made the task of recovering and maintaining stable economic development more and more burdensome.
Global issues such as climate change, geopolitical tensions, epidemics, food and energy crises threaten national development strategies.
In that context, the Government of Vietnam has implemented many measures to ensure people's health, effectively control the epidemic, without sacrificing people's health for economic growth, and at the same time provide social security packages to support businesses, workers and vulnerable groups.
With vaccine diplomacy, Vietnam has increased its access to many sources such as the COVAX Global Vaccine Access Program, the United Nations agency and international partners, thereby successfully implementing the largest vaccination campaign in history, ensuring that all people receive the full dose by March 3.
Regarding climate action, despite limited fiscal space, the Government of Vietnam still focuses on long-term development priorities, implementing international commitments including commitments at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) on net zero emissions by 0, mobilizing resources through the establishment of a climate-mobilization partnership of USD 2050 billion by 2022 to mobilize energy transition.
As a result, Vietnam has effectively recovered from the pandemic, with economic growth reaching 8,02% in 2022, the highest in the past 10 years, stabilizing the macro-economy and effectively managing debt.
The multidimensional poverty rate decreased by 1,2% compared to 2021 and Vietnam continues to be in the group of countries with a high human development index.
This result comes from important lessons learned, that is the nation's resilience, the government's main task is to protect and improve the livelihoods and environment for the people through ensuring and maintaining political stability, ensuring the macro-economy, and social security so that no one is left behind.
In addition, it is necessary to strengthen national internal resources and mobilize the participation of all sectors of society, in parallel with mobilizing resources from the outside through strengthening international cooperation, partnerships, foreign investment and free trade agreements.
Equally important is to avoid spreading resources, but to focus on priority areas, encouraging the participation of the private sector to increase the scale and quality of development finance.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang also said that strengthening the partnership on the basis of mutual respect and sharing is an indispensable element to achieve concrete results in sustainable development, and emphasized that UNDP has been, is and will continue to be one of the most important and reliable partners of Vietnam on the path of development and integration.
Talking at the meeting, representatives of UNDP and other countries highly appreciated the results that Vietnam has achieved in post-pandemic economic recovery, ensuring social security and responding to climate change through reasonable and timely policies, as well as sharing Vietnam's experience in building autonomy and independence on the path of development as well as in fostering a close and effective partnership in many aspects of development with UNDP.
