In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), the family of Mr. Tan Seo Hy in Na Cap village, Lung Khau Nhin commune, Muong Khuong district, harvested 10 tons of bananas for traders from the lowlands to buy. A quick calculation shows that Mr. Hy earned over 200 million VND. In nearly five years of growing bananas, his family had never earned so much.
"Mostly regular customers come to buy, and the bananas are beautiful and sell for 22,000 VND/kg. This year's income is better than in previous years, so the family is very happy," shared Mr. Tan Seo Hy.

At local markets, the price of beautiful green bananas for the traditional five-fruit offering is 2-4 times higher this year than last year. Meanwhile, on the banana plantations, the price offered by traders is also skyrocketing daily. With just about 100 banana trees producing bunches for Tet (Lunar New Year), the family of Mr. Vang Van Than in Na Cap village, Lung Khau Nhin commune, Muong Khuong district will have a prosperous Tet.
Mr. Vang Van Than said: "The price of bananas changes every day. In my village, there used to be few households growing bananas, but now many are growing them, and we're lucky to have a good harvest with high prices, so everyone is happy."
People are delighted because the banana harvest is abundant and the prices are good.
According to traders, the high price of bananas this Tet holiday is due to the recent Typhoon Yagi in the North, which damaged many banana-growing areas and resulted in a scarcity of bananas compared to previous years. Trucks are now coming directly to the fields to collect the bananas, saving farmers the trouble of transporting them far. The price has now reached approximately 22,000 VND/kg for green bananas. Enthusiastic, farmers are harvesting their bananas while simultaneously planting a new crop. Currently, the newly planted area has reached nearly 20 hectares.
Mr. Lu Van Tinh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Lung Khau Nhin commune, Muong Khuong district, added: "Officials from the Department of Agriculture and the Service Center also guided farmers on techniques to cultivate banana trees to avoid pests and diseases. We have also coordinated with the company to establish a planting area code for export purposes."
Besides exporting, growing bananas for harvest during the Lunar New Year is a new trend in banana cultivation among farmers in Lao Cai . Diversifying markets will facilitate the consumption of green bananas, bringing farmers bountiful harvests and prosperity.
