Hau Giang, a challenging region, is developing into an urban area.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên16/09/2023

In early 2004, Can Tho province was divided into Hau Giang province and Can Tho city, both directly under the central government. At its inception, the impoverished Hau Giang province had only 9 small, scattered towns of relatively modest size.

Important information to note

Hau Giang province has risen from humble beginnings, making remarkable efforts through each term and progressing rapidly in urbanization. In particular, during the 2020-2025 term, urbanization was identified as one of the four key pillars in Hau Giang province's economic development. Therefore, the entire province is actively promoting and attracting domestic and foreign investment to develop its urban areas.

Mr. Dong Van Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hau Giang province, said that in the period from November 2022 to March 2023, the People's Committee of Hau Giang province issued 9 decisions approving the investment policy for new urban area projects in Vi Thanh City (the provincial capital), Nga Bay City, Long My Town, and Chau Thanh District, with a total area of over 110 hectares and a total estimated cost of over 4,115 billion VND. These projects, upon completion, will create a special highlight for the urban areas of Hau Giang. Thus, after nearly 20 years of formation and development, as of mid-September 2023, Hau Giang has 18 classified urban areas, including 1 Type II urban area (Vi Thanh City), 2 Type III urban areas (Nga Bay City, Long My Town), and 15 Type V urban areas (4 Type V urban areas are communes that have not yet been upgraded to towns), with an urbanization rate of over 29.75%.

According to Mr. Dong Van Thanh, Hau Giang's urban areas are developing quite comprehensively, gradually meeting the criteria for a central and regional urban area. Urban infrastructure is increasingly being prioritized, and the Hau Giang real estate market continues to thrive. The Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee has set a target of achieving an urbanization rate of over 32% by 2025; developing Chau Thanh District and Chau Thanh A District towards urban-industrial development; investing in Vi Thanh City, Nga Bay City, and Long My Town to become key growth centers of the province; and simultaneously implementing strategic, key projects with a ripple effect to support the development of other urban areas.

The People's Committee of Hau Giang province requested the construction of a synchronous urban infrastructure in a modern direction, approaching the criteria of green and civilized cities for key urban areas; focusing resources to invest in many key transportation routes in urban areas and areas with advantages in attracting investment to effectively exploit land (on both sides of the road); building and developing harmoniously between urban and rural areas, people and nature, protecting the environment well, maintaining ecological balance and responding to climate change…
