THE SMILE IS BACK
Immediately upon arriving in South Korea, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team began high-intensity training with two sessions per day. Despite the cold weather, the players were enthusiastic about the coaching staff's new training methods. Information from South Korea showed positive signs of a united and determined team. There was no time for rest, no time to relax and enjoy the scenery and the wonderful early winter atmosphere of the ancient city of Gyeongju; instead, it was all about strenuous, high-intensity training sessions.
Coach Kim Sang-sik and the Vietnamese national team are highly focused in every training session in South Korea.
Whether it's gym sessions or high-difficulty tactical drills, the team atmosphere is always enthusiastic, cheerful, and full of laughter. The Korean coach's style is quite different from the somewhat rigid pedagogical methods of Coach Troussier. Coach Kim is approachable and sociable with the players, directly passing the ball and playing keep-away with them. His gentle yet firm approach helps the players avoid excessive psychological pressure while maintaining discipline. This fosters team spirit and allows each member to feel comfortable and ready to handle the heavy training load. The team's tactical formations and playing style have been and will be more clearly defined when facing the tough test of strong opposing teams.
FINDING THE RIGHT WAY TO PLAY
In addition to strengthening and improving physical fitness with heavy training and gym workouts, the Vietnamese national team has been focusing heavily on ball control and initiating attacks from their own half of the field in recent days. Most tactical exercises emphasize the quality of passes from their own half, focusing on speed, accuracy, and precise destination. Another crucial requirement is that passes must be intended to give the recipient an advantage or provide direction for subsequent ball development. Midfielders are tasked with controlling and circulating the ball smoothly and flexibly.
Mr. Kim is expected to face many challenges.
A crucial requirement that the coaching staff is setting for the players to improve their ball control and coordination at high intensity is good passing with both feet, as well as quick ball handling with one-touch passes. These are fundamental elements that have not been properly addressed in both the V-League and the national team. Often, our players are too careless and make inaccurate, misplaced, and low-quality passes. This makes the Vietnamese national team very susceptible to losing possession in the midfield and lacking high-impact passes in the opponent's third of the field. In fact, the Vietnamese national team has failed in major tournaments recently because they haven't developed these special "tricks," making them easy targets for opponents to anticipate.
Over the past few days, the Vietnamese national team has been practicing high-intensity passing and ball control drills, constantly moving from the back of the field, circulating the ball through midfielders with one-touch passes, quickly deploying the ball to the flanks, passing it back, and shooting. Overall, these exercises can both improve general physical fitness, aerobic and anaerobic endurance, and enhance passing and ball control skills under high intensity and pressure, preparing them to meet the demands of more difficult tactical exercises in the coming period.
Overall, the players were very enthusiastic and responded well to the coach's instructions. Of course, there were occasional misplaced passes and mistakes, but all were promptly addressed, analyzed, and learned from to avoid recurrence. The living, training, and accommodation conditions in South Korea were also carefully planned to ensure the most scientific approach. The biggest concern right now is the injury to some key players like Quang Hai, Dinh Bac, and Thanh Chung. However, according to information from the team's medical department, these players will recover in time and participate with the team in the upcoming important friendly matches.
The initial stages presented certain difficulties, but the Vietnamese team adapted well and found the rhythm of training and daily life to be optimal. Hopefully, with this good foundation of preparation, Coach Kim and his players will have quality friendly matches and gradually return to their best form at the AFF Cup 2024 at the end of the year.
