(NLĐO) - A delegation from the Command of Naval Region 1 visited and extended early New Year greetings to the military and civilians on Tra Ban Island, Van Don District ( Quang Ninh Province).

In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake (2015), during the coldest weather in Northern Vietnam, ships of the 1st Naval Region Command braved the waves from the mainland to "bring the New Year" to the soldiers and people in the northeastern coastal region of the country.

Rear Admiral Vu Van Nam inspects combat readiness at Point A, Radar Station 485.

At approximately 5 a.m. on a day at the end of the year, a delegation led by Rear Admiral Vu Van Nam, Commander of Naval Region 1, arrived at Tra Ban Island, Van Don District, Quang Ninh Province.

After nearly three hours, following a 7-kilometer-long, single-track road through the primeval forest, the task force finally reached Area A, Radar Station 485 on the mountaintop, where officers and soldiers were on duty guarding the skies and seas.

The handshakes and hugs from the soldiers at Radar Station 485 seemed to dispel the biting cold of the northeastern sea and sky.

Radar Station 485 is located at an altitude of 485 meters above sea level. Its mission is to manage, observe, detect, and accurately and promptly report airborne and maritime targets to higher-level command centers. Station 485 is known as the "All-Seeing Eye of the Sea".

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Manh Thanh, Head of Radar Station 1 of the Navy, originally from Hai Duong province , shared: "More than 20 years ago, Ban Sen commune did not have access to the national power grid, so the station's living conditions were very limited. Food was mainly dried. The unit had to dig wells in the stream to have water for daily use during the dry season. On cold winter days, the soldiers had to light fires to boil water next to the well for bathing. In the last decade or so, the station has had electricity, clean water, and a freezer, ensuring fresh food. The unit also actively grows vegetables and raises chickens and pigs, so the soldiers' lives have improved significantly."

Acknowledging and commending the officers and soldiers of the station for their unity, overcoming difficulties, resourcefulness, and creativity in readily accepting and successfully completing assigned tasks, Rear Admiral Vu Van Nam, Commander of Naval Region 1, expressed his hope that the soldiers would strive to overcome difficulties, uphold the spirit of combat readiness, and firmly protect the sacred land, sea, and islands of the Fatherland.

Rear Admiral Vu Van Nam, Commander of Naval Region 1, emphasized that while celebrating the Lunar New Year, it is crucial to maintain a high level of vigilance and effectively carry out the tasks of observing, detecting, managing, and accurately and promptly reporting airborne and maritime targets within the area to the higher-level command center.

In 2024, agencies and units were always ready for combat; observing, detecting, and expelling 973 instances of foreign fishing vessels violating Vietnam's territorial waters. Region 1 also actively participated in search and rescue operations and fire prevention and control. Hundreds of vehicles, boats, and over 7,000 officers and soldiers were mobilized to carry out search and rescue missions during Typhoon No. 3 ( Yagi ), including rescuing 20 people, towing 3 fishing vessels, and cutting down 2,500 fallen trees…

Naval Region 1 has effectively implemented the program "The Vietnamese Navy as a support for fishermen to venture out to sea and maintain their livelihoods." It organized talks and propaganda on maritime and island issues for nearly 40,000 cadres and Party members; and promoted human resource recruitment for 14,000 teachers and students in the northern provinces…

Achieving those results in 2024 was the result of the extraordinary efforts of officers and soldiers throughout the region, including the significant contributions of the officers and soldiers of Radar Station 485.

The 485 radar station of the 1st Naval Region is located in Ban Sen commune on Tra Ban Island, which has an estimated land area of 87 km2. The island is 23 km long, 6 km wide, 20 nautical miles from the mainland, and 10 km from Cai Bau Island. It is the largest island in Bai Tu Long Bay. The island is home to 317 households with 1,234 inhabitants, comprising seven ethnic groups (Kinh, Hoa, Tay, Nung, San Diu, Dao, and Muong), of which 38% are ethnic minorities.

During the trip, the delegation also visited, extended New Year greetings, and presented gifts to encourage officers, soldiers, the Party Committee and People's Committee of Ban Sen commune, Ban Sen Kindergarten, and Ban Sen Primary and Secondary School. The delegation also presented Tet gifts to policy beneficiary families and households with difficult circumstances in Ban Sen commune; and presented national flags to fishermen on the island.

Rear Admiral Vu Van Nam, Commander of Naval Region 1, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable guidance and assistance from the Party Committee, the local government, and agencies on the island, as well as the long-standing support of the people of Ban Sen for the officers and soldiers of Station 485. Mr. Dinh Trung Kien, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Ban Sen commune, shared that 60 years ago, the island was chosen by the Navy as an observation point for the northeastern sea and airspace of the Fatherland. The station participated in combat and achieved many successes in the resistance war against the US to save the country. The Party Committee, government, and people of the commune have always shown concern and support, serving as a solid rear base for the unit stationed there.

The delegation presented flags and extended New Year greetings to the fishermen of Ban Sen island commune.

According to Mr. Kien, the island received electricity in 2015, and a sturdy concrete road was built across the island in 2021. Over the years, thanks to the attention of the government at all levels, the material and spiritual lives of the island's residents have gradually improved. The main economic sectors here include: forestry, forest exploitation, orange and tea cultivation, aquaculture, and fishing…

"Generations of officers and soldiers at the station have contributed much effort and money to building infrastructure in the commune and villages. Whenever the locality faces a rescue, relief, or forest fire prevention situation, the unit always sends vehicles and forces to provide timely support. Every Tet holiday, the local government also regularly interacts, extends greetings, and helps share and encourage the soldiers to alleviate their homesickness and longing for loved ones... The relationship between the locality and the unit has become even closer as many young officers of the unit have married local women," Mr. Kien said.
