" The sweet reward for hard work"

At the end of July 2024, joy came to the coaches and martial arts enthusiasts of the province when Tran Dinh Hoa, a 17-year-old boy from Quang Tri, excellently overcame many opponents to win the Gold Medal in the youth sparring category, 44-48 kg weight class, at the 5th Vietnam Young Talent Martial Arts Cup Championship - 2024 held in Hanoi .

This achievement is the sweet fruit of a long journey of nurturing and cultivating Dinh Hoa's love and talent for martial arts. Hoa shared: “This is the first time I've participated in a large-scale, high-quality martial arts tournament, bringing together many young talents and attracting thousands of viewers. Moreover, all the matches were broadcast live, so pressure was inevitable. However, with the encouragement and guidance of experienced people, such as Coach Phan Van Ngoc and Mr. Tran Van Nhat, I was mentally prepared to compete with the highest determination.”

At the 5th Vietnam Youth Martial Arts Cup Championship, in every match from the knockout rounds to the final, Dinh Hoa started very confidently against his opponents. His forte is his leg techniques, and his ambidextrousness allows him to score points more easily in sparring. Despite his young age, Dinh Hoa displays composure during matches and sharp reflexes in his strikes. With sound tactics, calmness, and careful thought in each blow, he secured three convincing victories to win the gold medal in the 44-48 kg weight category, age group 16-17. This impressive achievement by the young man from Quang Tri has captivated the audience and caught the attention of many Muay Thai coaches.

Having grown up practicing the traditional Mai Han martial arts, Dinh Hoa has overcome many difficulties, always striving his best to pursue his passion and achieving good results in major tournaments like today. “When I was 9 years old, seeing many older children in the village studying traditional Mai Han martial arts in Gio Hai commune, I asked my parents to let me join. After studying there for two years, I transferred to train at the Gio Linh District Cultural and Information - Sports Center. From the moment I was introduced to martial arts, I felt a strong desire to be involved and dreamed of becoming a professional martial artist. Therefore, even though the distance from my home to Gio Linh town is quite far, I always try to leave early and return late to make time to meet with my teachers and perfect my training,” Dinh Hoa recounted.

According to Coach Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien, who directly taught Dinh Hoa, from the very beginning of his exposure to traditional martial arts, the boy showed great talent. Born into a disadvantaged family, Dinh Hoa learned to be hardworking, persistent, and unafraid of hardship in order to learn new and valuable aspects of traditional martial arts. His relentless training and efforts have brought him many high achievements at traditional martial arts competitions. For example, in 2022, in his first participation in the Traditional Martial Arts Competition at the 8th Quang Tri Provincial Sports Festival 2021-2022, he won two Silver Medals in the kata performance category. This served as a strong encouragement for him to practice new disciplines and aim for higher goals...

Determined to pursue a professional martial arts career.

Determined to pursue a career in martial arts, Dinh Hoa has always aspired to experience the essence of various martial arts disciplines. Therefore, in recent years, he has diligently practiced the sparring techniques of traditional Vietnamese martial arts, familiarized himself with boxing, and participated in numerous tournaments to gain experience and learn from others.

To help Dinh Hoa develop his martial arts talent more comprehensively, Coach Thuy Tien continued to guide and support his training in sparring. “When I switched to sparring training, I found it very enjoyable because I could apply the forms to real combat; my physical fitness improved with more diverse exercises. More importantly, mastering sparring skills and getting acquainted with boxing gave me the opportunity to participate in more boxing matches and conquer glory,” Dinh Hoa shared.

Recently, Dinh Hoa has been regularly training and learning more about sparring and boxing skills at the Quang Tri Sport Center. Despite the longer commute and more demanding training conditions, this young man's determination to pursue his passion remains undiminished. He continues to strive and prove himself at nationwide freestyle martial arts competitions with numerous gold medals. In 2022, he participated in the Freestyle Martial Arts Tournament for clubs from within and outside the province in Quang Nam, winning a gold medal in the sparring category. In 2023, Dinh Hoa again registered for this tournament and won another gold medal in the sparring category.

At the 1st Hue City Traditional Martial Arts Club Tournament - 2024, held in July 2024, Dinh Hoa excellently won 1 gold medal in the performance category of the Ngoc Tran Quyen form and 1 gold medal in the sparring category of the 44-48 kg weight class.

Martial arts masters and coaches who have taught Dinh Hoa all agree that he possesses many qualities of a martial arts talent. Phan Van Ngoc, a martial arts coach at the Quang Tri Sport Center, said: "Besides his diligence and perseverance, Dinh Hoa's most commendable quality is his calmness, confidence, and intelligence when facing opponents. Along with that is his great effort and determination in training and competition to win."

With youthful energy, this young man always yearns to prove himself, setting specific goals to strive for in his pursuit of martial arts. “When taking Dinh Hoa to compete in youth tournaments, I always have a training plan, constantly checking his physical fitness; instilling determination in him, carefully discussing tactics, and reminding him to maintain a high level of effort and not be afraid of his opponents.”

In addition, I also provided accommodation and meals for him to train more systematically, dedicating my full time to equipping Dinh Hoa with all the necessary skills and confidence for competition.

"We are delighted that in such a short time, Dinh Hoa has confidently stepped onto the big stage and won a gold medal. This is an important foundation for him to aim for a future as a professional martial artist," Mr. Ngoc shared.
