The house, named Futurecave, is a passion project by Dutch designer Joost Bakker. Located in a secluded 128-hectare rainforest in the Tweed Valley, about an hour's drive from Byron Bay, the property boasts pristine natural landscapes with ancient cedar trees estimated to be around 500 years old, waterfalls, and natural streams. The actor, born in 1987, acquired the property at a discounted price during the 2020 pandemic. Upon completion, the house is expected to have a floor area of approximately 830 square meters with a total construction cost of up to $2.65 million.
The most distinctive feature of Futurecave lies in its zero-waste architectural philosophy and its ability to operate completely independently of the national power grid. The construction permit application, submitted by Joost Bakker, has been presented to the Tweed Shire local council. The houses are designed to be dispersed to maximize the preservation of the natural environment, minimize the impact of concrete construction, and optimize views of the surrounding forest and mountains. The project is expected to become a carbon sink, creating an ideal ecological environment to protect endangered insects and animals.

In terms of building materials, the project largely eliminated traditional concrete after more than a year of experimenting with alternatives. The majority of the two-story structure, comprising six separate bedrooms, is constructed using hemp bricks. This environmentally friendly raw material, harvested from a farm in southern New South Wales, possesses fire-resistant properties, effective insulation, and the ability to absorb significant carbon emissions. Not only the structural elements, but the entire interior, including curtains, mattresses, pillows, and wooden furniture, utilizes hemp as a source material. On Instagram, designer Joost Bakker also shared images of unique materials such as recycled oyster shells and plant-based materials to demonstrate the sustainability of the project.
Hollywood star seeks peace.
Speaking to the Australian Financial Review at the end of 2025, the "High School Musical" star revealed his desire to find a peaceful space after years of stressful work in the American film capital. Owning a property amidst the Australian wilderness became the ideal choice to help him rest and recharge his mental energy between film projects or busy promotional tours.
Zac Efron and the designer conceived the idea for a collaboration after meeting on the travel show "Down to Earth" in 2021. Recently, on May 8th, Bakker posted a photo of himself with the actor, officially revealing the construction process, which had been kept secret from the media for a long time. The 39-year-old actor had been planning to settle permanently in Australia for some time. In 2021, he decided to sell his Los Angeles mansion for $7.8 million. The period of self-isolation during the pandemic helped him develop a special connection and affection for the country. Although he had a 10-month relationship with local model Vanessa Valladares before they parted ways, Zac Efron currently chooses a private lifestyle, not sharing details about his personal relationships.
Rising to fame at age 19 thanks to his leading role in the hit musical series "High School Musical," Zac Efron underwent a period of physical transformation to participate in action-oriented, muscular film projects such as "The Lucky One" (2010), "Neighbors" (2014), and "Baywatch" (2017). Although he achieved significant commercial success thanks to his large fan base, his roles during this period did not receive positive reviews from critics.
Fans will soon witness his return to the screen in the television series "Angels Heart," a collaboration between HBO and A24. This work is adapted from William Hjortsberg's 1978 novel "Falling Angel," which was previously adapted into a film in 1987 starring Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet. In the new version, Zac Efron plays a detective tasked by a mysterious man with finding the whereabouts of a missing woman. His investigation leads him to confront a powerful supernatural force attempting to conceal a crime.
