Disney continues to demonstrate the power of its animation brand as "Zootopia 2" (Vietnamese title: "Zootopia 2") made an impressive opening weekend in North America during Thanksgiving, setting a global record for the highest-grossing animated film opening weekend of all time.

During the five-day holiday, the sequel to "Zootopia" grossed $156 million in the US and Canada. In just the three-day weekend, the film reached $96.8 million, making "Zootopia 2" one of the biggest box office hits of 2025.

Globally, the film grossed $556 million in just a few days – the fourth-highest opening weekend in film history and the biggest international debut ever for an animated film.

Notably, the Chinese market contributed $272 million, accounting for nearly half of the total revenue. This also makes it the biggest opening weekend of all time for a Hollywood animated film in this market, surpassing the record of "Zootopia" (2016). Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, called it "a proud moment for Disney Animation and a fantastic start to the holiday movie season."

Released nearly a decade after its first installment, "Zootopia 2" brings audiences back to the rabbit police officer Judy Hopps and the fox Nick Wilde on a new adventure in the animal metropolis. The reason the sequel is so popular is because it contains all three elements that audiences love: an expanded animal world , a story that resonates with both adults and children, and the return of the most beloved "ambiguous" on-screen couple from Disney.

This installment's storyline begins just one week after the events of the first film. As the city celebrates its 100th anniversary, traces of the reptiles, which had been eradicated from Zootopia for 100 years, suddenly reappear. Judy and Nick are drawn into investigating a strange smuggling operation, leading to a dark conspiracy involving the history of the very city they are protecting.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a 93% positive review rating from critics. According to David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research, the film's opening weekend revenue far surpassed that of the first installment, demonstrating the franchise's enduring appeal to global audiences.

Meanwhile, the musical film "Wicked: For Good" continued its successful second week in theaters, grossing $62.8 million in North America and bringing its global total to $393 million.

The story in "Wicked: For Good" continues as Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) are drawn into opposing paths after the events in Emerald City. Elphaba is considered an "evil witch" by all of Oz, while Glinda is revered as a symbol of goodness and order. The arrival of Dorothy, a girl from Kansas, changes the landscape of Oz, inadvertently bringing long-held conspiracies and secrets to light. To face their own fate and that of Oz, Elphaba and Glinda must confront each other one last time, rediscovering the understanding that once bound them together.

The strong box office performance of "Zootopia 2" and "Wicked: For Good" turned Thanksgiving weekend into a rare bright spot of the year. Total box office revenue over the five days reached $290 million, with the three-day weekend contributing $188 million, offering hope for a year of sluggish box office performance. Domestic US box office revenue year-to-date reached $7.8 billion, a slight increase of 1.2% year-on-year, but still 23% lower than pre-COVID-19 levels.

Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian believes the success of the holiday season could provide momentum for growth in the latter part of the year, especially with the upcoming releases of “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “Five Nights at Freddy's 2”.
