General Vo Nguyen Giap (1911 – 2013) was a steadfast revolutionary soldier, an outstanding and devoted disciple of President Ho Chi Minh, and a highly esteemed leader of our Party, State, and people. He was also the first general of the Vietnam People’s Army. Assuming significant responsibilities at the age of 37, General Vo Nguyen Giap demonstrated extraordinary willpower and relentless dedication, successfully fulfilling his duties and earning the trust of the Party, President Ho Chi Minh, and the Vietnamese people. Over his 30 years as Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Secretary of the Central Military Commission, General Vo Nguyen Giap garnered affection and respect from generals to soldiers across the entire army, and was revered by the populace as “The People’s General.” During pivotal moments in Vietnamese history following the August Revolution in 1945 and throughout the military campaigns against French colonialism and American imperialism, General Vo Nguyen Giap played a crucial role under the guidance of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, contributing significantly to historic victories. He has become a legendary figure and an outstanding military genius, earning admiration not only from the people of Vietnam but also from international dignitaries including heads of state, politicians, scholars, historians, reporters, and writers, and a lot of ordinary people as well worldwide. This recognition was rooted in General Giap’s embodiment of moral virtues such as “diligence, thrifty, integrity and uprightness” (cần, kiệm, liêm, chính), “public-spirit and selflessness” (chí công vô tư); of the general’s qualities such as wisdom, courage, humanity, trust, integrity, and loyalty (trí, dũng, nhân, tín, liêm, trung) as instilled by President Ho Chi Minh
